I suppose this shouldn’t piss me off any more, but it still does. This poorly-reproduced copy, like numerous others of the defining photos taken at Fl.Horst Neubiberg, was taken by Merle C. Olmsted, and as usual, he is not credited. In fact, that’s Merle in the photo.
Beyond that, there is an interesting back-story to this photo. Several times, Merle told me that he was drawn to pose with this particular aircraft because, unlike most of the other II./JG 52 Bf 109’s that featured yellow rudders and cowl bands, this aircraft (WNF-built Bf 109 G-10/U4, WNr. 61xxxx, 1+ - black o/l white, from 5./II/JG 52) featured a “dull faded red cowling.” I was so intrigued by his assertion that I asked him about it on several occasions just to confirm it.
Should this be true, it would certainly make for a striking Messerschmitt indeed.
Respectfully,

I'm glad you posted your comment Steve. For all of its benefits, the internet has its bad side. Had this photo been reproduced in a book or magazine without proper attribution, someone would have noticed and been able to point this out to a real person. Now, anonymous persons located in various places can post and offer for sale photos that the average buyer would think are authentic. Complaints to eBay could result in a particular photo's removal and have some affect on the seller's standing. Or not. If someone thinks it's real and buys it, that seller could continue to offer more of the same. I think some mechanism for reporting or keeping track of sellers who offer repros should be put in place.

Best,
Ed

There isn't one on eBay but at least here everyone has the opportunity to report dubious sellers.

I thought that was Merle in the photo. It's only the right thing to do to give him credit even if he is gone. He left so many, to us now, wonders.

Thanks Steve, for giving proper tribute to Merle C. Olmsted, and the full story behind this photo, including this tantalising red nose for this particular plane. Is W.Nr. 610583 not confirmed ?

Cheers

Boujour à tous,
The post 3955 shows a photo a wrecked Dewoitine 520 in german markings (left behind at Reims).
