Re: Ju88 Loss Data for I./KG 54, October 1942

Dear superniedy , I will try to translate for you the most important points of this article.
The author talks about his adventure , when he went to Psathura Island with a greek captain , mr.Drosos Drosakis , in order to see the wreck of the Ju-88.In their first attempt they managed to spot only the canopy and the tail-rudder of the plane. Finally , they found the wreck lying at 32 meters depth . They search for the identification plate but they didn’t find it. They take with them one maschine gun , a flare-pistol , a lamp , and some instruments from the broken panel. They gave all this stuff to the Greek Airforce museum in Athens.
The author also found an interview taken from the son of the lighthouse-man. He describes the whole incident which happened at the 27th of May 1942 at 02:00 . (Note that the lighthouse during the duration of the war was out of order.) He saw the Ju-88 ditching in the sea near the island. The crew left the plane quickly and got in the lifeboat. The family who lived at the lighthouse helped them to find their way to the small island . The Greeks offered them food but they refused to take it (they afraid of being poisoned) and preferred to ate some fresh onions from the garden. The crew after taking a bath went for sleep but during the whole night always someone of them was asleep . One of them was born in Austria and he was talking Italian so he managed to talk with the father and told their story. The route of the Ju-88 was from Tobruk to Sicily but , due to enemy fighters , they headed for the North Aegean where they left short of fuel. After that the crew left the island with a boat and after some days they reached Alonissos. One of the crew left a photo to the family as a souvenir. The lifeboat left by the german crew was used by the family to make hand-made shoes.
Later the author came in contact with foreign history researchers and he gathered further information for the incident. Most of the information came from Radke’s book about KG 54. He continues his research for the pilot Hasso Holst.
Hope this helps.
