and just because its been around for some time, didn't think it was good enough to post.
I differ, since this time the photo is very well reproduced on e-bay and it also shows a quite interesting Standard (Fisher Body built) SJ-1
It shows one of three SJ-1 converted at Wright Field to take the Curtiss OX-5 engine.
The seller seems to be so focused on the photographer that he cannot see the forest because of all the trees.
Aircraft is no JN-4 and not even a J-1 as given by Baugher on his site (no such designation actually existed)
The use of another SJ-1's rudder also adds to the dimension. All-in-all a very nice photo! I exchanged the one I already had and downloaded to this one!!

Intersting information and good to learn new information on the SJ-1 (as I now know:) )


Here's another one I suspect may also have been seen before given the origin of the photo. I take it the A3340 on the back of the photo is the aircraft serial. If so here is a photo of Curtiss JN-4D A3340 :

Striking markings. I take it, its still in military service based on the the Curtiss N-8 serial 60 in the background?

First of all I am not able to verify which sub-version of the JN-4 this is.
Secondly I am not convinced the 'A3340' refers to a US serial number.
It could just as well be a Smithsonian negative file number.

Taking a random number and say it was a 'Jenny' and you have a pretty good chance it was since it was a very numerous aircraft indeed.

Described by the seller as the army's second airplane,but Joe Baugher has serial number 2 alloted to a Curtiss,while there are a number of serials for Wright Model B aircraft. So which serial number was assigned to the machine shown?

Still haven't got the Bible? :)
Casari says this was the "second" Wright A for the Army. The first one seems by some to have been the one in which Lt Selfridge was killed when flown by Orville Wright.
So this one, which was in fact the first one accepted by the US Army, became SC No 1.
When seen here it had been modified/rebuilt as a Model B (during Nov and Dec 1910).
Seems it was damaged before being stored for the winter 1910-11, because in Jan 1911 money was required for repairs....and fundraising was made to the public! The SC was obviously very short of money or perhaps more likely didn't want it any more so nothing really came out of all that. In May 1911 the aircraft was donated to the Smithsonian Institution.
This photo (undated) was probably taken just before the hand over.
