Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce

Stig,

Yes I mispelt the airfield in the first post and then copied it in the second. Damn.Tokorozawa it is.No & Su are, quoting from the Starkings book on Imperial Japanese Army flying Schools 'Higana charecters ....used occasionally as a system in order to indicate an order sequence similar to the western use of the alphabet (A,B,C etc). So No & Su are respectively the 25th and 47th syllables in the Higana system and indicate the 25th and 47th aircraft of the Tokorozawa Flying School.

Clint

No worries Clint

Thanks for the explanation. So these signs are actually a symbol identification system. That also explains the numbers you wrote after each symbol.
Since the Japanese used "normal" digits as well, I wonder why they used symbols here...

Ah yes, and then we have that book..... :)

Cheers
Stig

I don't recognise the tail marking. Can anyone identify the unit of the machine?

(Ki.27 photo) the 2 diagonal stripes could be 5th Sentai on Nates to 8/42 ( white = 2nd Chutai) based in the Tokyo area, then on Ki.45s to 1943.

Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce

(Ki.9 photo). The sloping bars on the top wing were carried by at least 2 Instructor's Schools in Japan presumably for extra identification, the white bars (a black cowling was standard) may be flight markings (?)

Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce

Hello Nick,

Thanks for both replies. Looking at the Ki-27 photo after your reply I now notice what appear to be a red outline to the white bars which I'd previously overlooked. So 5 Sentai it is.
