Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Thanks Martin
Yes difficult indeed to find solutions to all the problems during this period. Cheers Stig |
Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Martin,
Thanks for the extra info. One encouraging thing is that more and more new photos seem to be surfacing, nearly all from German sources. Andy |

Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Thanks Ed, more photos from France!
#2 is Hurricane P3403, by coincidence another of those which was lost in France with no known further allocation after "Tangmere" #3 is Battle L5502/QT-D of 142 Sqn, lost in the early hours of 29 July 1940. This aircraft was very well photographed by the Germans. All three crew were made POW: https://discovery.nationalarchives.g...ls/r/C14502948 although Edwards was shot in 1942 whilst trying to escape from a POW camp in Poland: https://losses.internationalbcc.co.uk/loss/106937/ |

I wonder how long it rested on that rolling stock? Initially you could read a code Z behind the roundel. With more and more "hackers" passing by the fabric deteriorated quite rapidly. Wonder where all that fabric (from all those aircraft) went in the end? Most of it was probably thrown away somewhere. The realities of war doesn't really promote carrying dead useless weight.... Cheers Stig |
Re: eBay: Allied intrest
That fabric was trophies of war. Souvenirs for the victors.

What I wonder is what happened to it. If it was all kept and stowed away at home we would basically be drowning in old fabric by now. I still believe most of it was thrown away pretty soon after "hacking" :) Cheers Stig |
Re: eBay: Allied intrest
I know you know that but others might not. No one can say what happened to it. Perhaps some ritual was carried out.
What happened to the souvenirs the Allies took from German aircraft? Best, Ed |
Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Good question Ed
Depending on what they took and under what circumstances I think we have more German artifacts kept than Allied, but that is just a feeling..... Cheers Stig |

Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Ed,
No. 1 #1814 is a great find, possibly the first image of this Blenheim from 18 Squadron (code 'WV') to come to light. But which Blenheim exactly ? I cannot read the last digit. Hope someone can enhance that part of the photo. It is probably L9186 or L9187. 18 Squadron used four Blenheims in the 'L918x' range. L9185 is reputed to be the belly-landed 'WV-N', shot down by a Spitfire on 21 May 1940. L9186 was damaged landing at Meharicourt on 8 May 1940, and was abandoned when the unit moved to Goyencourt on May 17th. L9187 is just stated to have been abandoned in France during May 1940. L9188 crashed on landing in England on 4 September 1940. So L9186 and L9187 are the most likely candidates here. However beware of any fates for these two as previously published. Establishing the fates of many of the 18 Squadron aircraft (by serial) is very difficult due in no small measure to the unreliability of their ORB. That frame in front of the near engine looks like something connected with an engine change and the airscrew appears to have been removed. L9186 would be a strong possibility here. Regards, Martin Gleeson. |

#1813 post 2 : it is MS. 406 n°406 of GC III/1, 2ème escadrille, lost 26/05/1940 close to Bapaume with Cne de Malmann |

Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Martin,
Thank you for your reply. I have seen so many burnt-out British aircraft with no identification. The resting position of this particular aircraft meant the fire burnt out and left what you see. Most unusual. I am just glad one more piece of information has been added to the historical record. Best, Ed |
Re: eBay: Allied intrest
You're welcome Bertrand. Thank you for the additional information.
Best, Ed |

Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Luck was with me as I can identify the Hurricane 'V' posted by Marco in #1819 as P3453. Other photos of this aircraft have appeared on EBay, showing the same few pieces of vegetation as camouflage (!), the bent panel under the nose and with the serial number.
The Form 78 aircraft history card shows that P3453 was officially taken on charge by 501 Squadron on 28-5-1940. The only entry after that is to record that it was 'Struck off Charge May 1940'. Of course it could just as easily have bben lost during June. Regards, Martin. |

Battle P2184/JN-P of 150 Sqn, usually said to have been abandoned on withdrawal from Ecury-sur-Coole on 15 May 40. It had been damaged in action a few days earlier.
There are plenty of photos showing the serial. |
