Thanks for posting this info on Linney I will give you my thoughts on it - But think there were only 2 Hurricanes recovered... The times in Linney's report are crutial and also it could explain why the earlier pilot has never been identified - he never existed!


BTW P/O [G.A.] Malone' or 'P/O G.A. Madore' - No such names exist on the dates in question in Errol Martyns books on New Zealanders lost in the air services during WW1 and WW2


His full name according to the London Gazette is Garfield Alexandra MADORE

Hello Paul,

It's a very small detail, but wouldn't 'Alexandra' be a typo of the London Gazette? CWGC has as his second name 'Alexander'

I wonder, is it usual in the UK to give boys a female name as second or third name? In the Netherlands it is; many roman catholic males have as third name the name of their godmother, as is the case with me.

Yes it could be a typo but I don't thinks so I found his full name listed twice in different Gazettes in differen years and spelt 'Alexandra' in both cases - I thought it was a typo as well

Hello Bart,

Thank you for your understanding and YES the fact that he is in the ANZAC Cemetery led me in that thought.

Good to know that Linney was a safe "Caterpillar" twice over .

Madore must be the correct name of this 242 Sqdn pilot lost in P2730 on the 23rd.

By the way can you refresh my memory as to how many a/c would be in a "Flight" in the 1940's as 242 sent a flight on the 13th according to RAF Commands site.

Exactly so, Bart! In fact, I have come across quite a few instances where the RAF List and subsequent CWGC entries have substituted masculine names incorrectly. An example is Hilary Patrick Mary EDRIDGE of 222 Squadron, kia 30.10.40. All records show his third name as Michael, which is certainly not correct. The substitution is perhaps understandable, though.

Hi,
Just to Confirm that Madore is comemorated in the Canadian Book of rememberance on page 603. There is also a photo of him standing on the wing of a bi-Plane looks like it could be a Hart or Hind.
Service number given as 42143, so Canadian not New Zealander.

Four pilots first from the 14th followed by six more with Squadron aircraft from the 16th (ie two days later).

They had a bad time -

23rd. P2550 P/O Benzie Baled wounded.
23rd. P2809 F/O.Graafstra Shot down KIA.
23rd. P2730 P/O. Madore KIA.
23rd. P3392 P/O Smiley Baled, POW.
24th.P3266 P/O. Hill KIA.
24th. P3272 P/O. Mitchell KIA.
28th. N2651 P/O Deacon POW.
28th. L1746 P/O. Jones KIA.
29th. L1756 Crashed on take off Manston Pilot ?
31st. P2732 P/O. Stewart KIA.
How many of the above were in the group that went over ?

Hi Gentlemen,

thank you all for your impressive response to this original query. I suppose it is a slim possibility that a third Hurricane ( first actually) was repaired and flown out before Linney and Strange escaped, maybe by a pilot already stranded at Merville ( I believe some pilots were left behind when their units flew back to UK as there were no serviceable aircraft available and had to make their own way home).
