Re: 1 Sqn on 16 August 1940
Tim
Strictly speaking, Manor Farm at Chidham is not exactly "marshland". However, it is very low lying and the field your Hurricane fell into borders the Channel and mud flats between Chidham and Thorney Island. I see that we recovered your machine in July 1976. Blimey! Thirty six years between the event and our recovery. Thirty two years between the recovery and today. Time flies. |

Thanks - & apologies for passing you by earlier!

Re: 1 Sqn on 16 August 1940
So it looks another case is solved, is not it?
By the way, Tim, I believe you should write you memories. |
Re: 1 Sqn on 16 August 1940
Can't remember what I had for breakfast, Franek!

Re: 1 Sqn on 16 August 1940
I often do the same, but I have no excuse!

Re: 1 Sqn on 16 August 1940
Damn, the Scotland Yard has a competing bussiness !
Do you all agree with an epilogue that P/O J.F.D. „Tim“ Elkington was very probably s/d by Oblt. Wick of 3./JG 2 ? Michal |

Easy meat, whoever!!

Re: 1 Sqn on 16 August 1940
I will double-check primary source for timing and come back.
Meanwile, here is Tim's control column recovered in 1976. Sadly, this was stolen from Tangmere c.1984/5. If anyone can provide information leading to its whereabouts and its return I will pay a handsome reward. Glad that we were able to give Tim his DI face, though, which is proudly stuck in his Logbook on the relevant entry. |
Re: 1 Sqn on 16 August 1940
Wick? So that can be writ for posterity??

Re: 1 Sqn on 16 August 1940
I suppose it makes no difference, but perhaps better than being "bagged" by a sprog pilot on his first op!? I think you should look at it as a kind of badge of honour, Tim, if it was the great man himself who notched you up on his rudder!!
