Re: From a C-47 crash site. Someone can help us?
Matteo,
Just did a check on wwiimemorial.com and there's one casualty with that name that says DNB. He is PFC James A. Wright (32070411) from New Jersey, born 1918. NARA enlistment record says "negro". Unfortunately no date of death is given on the honor list, so it all needs further investigation if he was indeed a victim of the crash. Regards, Leendert |
Re: From a C-47 crash site. Someone can help us?
Matteo,
On website findagrave I just discovered this piece of information when looking for James A. Wright. He is listed there with 31 July 1944! What's more: there's a headstone at Jefferson Barracks with nine names, including James A. Wright. Since graves at Jefferson Barracks are often for group burials, we may have all names? See picture on http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg...&PIpi=20444603 We now have to check all names. to see if it all matches. Regards, Leendert |
Re: From a C-47 crash site. Someone can help us?
Thru internment.net I noticed that the men were laid to rest at Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis, MO on 17 Jan 1950.
They also all have DNB on the NARA honor list. Regards, Leendert |

Yesterday we returned on crash site to search for some references about names of passengers.

Re: From a C-47 crash site. Someone can help us?
Matteo,
Thanks to Randy on the armyairforces.com website I heard that PFC Loney Portee, one of the victims mentioned above, belonged to Bravo Company, 366th Inf Regiment, 92nd Inf Div. The men were at first buried at the American Military Cemetery at Naples. There are some websites and also veterans organizations dedicated to 366th Inf Regiment. I gathered that in July 1944 the 366th was still attached to 15th Air Service Command and provided airbase security to stations in Sardinia and along the Adriatic. Regards, Leendert |
Re: From a C-47 crash site. Someone can help us?
Well done guys, I was away all weekend on a holiday so could not reply as would like to have via my smartphone. I'll review all fo these men via ancestry.com and elsewhere and see what turns up.
Matteo, always quote the serial numbers if you find them, that 8 digit number that was below his name, very important. |
Re: From a C-47 crash site. Someone can help us?
In a 1998 reference Sgt James Calvin Wyatt is also mentioned in connection with 366th Infantry Regiment, which did airfield protection duties.
The regiment wasn't attached to 92nd Inf Div at the time of the crash yet. Perhaps the 904th AirBase Security Battalion that's in the Group/Squadron report was the new assignment of the soldiers? Regards, Leendert |
