I don't believe you are correct in stating that 78-IAP had been equipped with Hurricanes by 27 September 1941.

Brian,

Could well be the case. I think that was a quote from one of the Osprey books...

According to Mardanov:

5 "english" Hurricanes covering 4 Pe-2 of 72 KAP against 6 Me 109E at 11:50. No losses from both sides.

Been a while but interesting to read this thread.

Of course there were no Hurricane loses on the 17th September. On the 27th September there were Hurricanes escorting bombers but again no RAF loses or Russian bombers. Actually the RAF pilots claimed a couple.

Also, they would not have been Soviet operated Hurricanes as this handover did not occur until October 1941.

Great thread though.

By the way, do you happen to know Florian Salwender's date of birth?

Excellent information - this really turns just a name into a real person. I'm sure there is more to come. I would seem that his final score would have been 28 or so.

Can anyone decipher the dates of Salwender's kill markings shown on the excellent photo contributed by Franck?

Exciting times!
Cheers
Brian

I'll be curious to see/recover the eBay picture I did post here.
Thanks very much.

Regards,
Franck.
