Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Looks like ER665 to me Faenor
All my sources says it was lost on 28 Dec 1942 together with two more aircraft from 152 Sq Out of curiosity, which is your other source regarding 28 Nov? Cheers Stig |

Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Regarding ER665, according to the Spitfire production list the pilot was killed:
http://www.airhistory.org.uk/spitfire/_prodn%20list.txt I know it's impossible to tell conclusively, but it looks like this aircraft made a successful forced landing, so presumably he died of wounds? |

Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Hello,
For what it's worth, RAF Commands Forum's database has - Tape with ER714 and Glenwright with ER665. Sadly the December 42 ORB is so faint it is hard to read, but from what I could make out for these two pilots there is no a/c serial number in the collem for them. There is also a forum post that seems to suggest ER852 for Glenwright but I think that this is for earlier in the month ? HMAW,vol 3 has on page 223 "British Casualties - 152 Sqn Spitfire Vb - ER660 - Left 1425, Souk el Arba a/d patrol, shot down by Bf109s; PltOff. E,R,Gray Mia. Spitfire Vb ER665 Souk el Arba a/d patrol, shot down by Bf 109s at 1410. Spitfire Vb ER714 Souk el Arba a/d patrol, shot down by Bf 109s at 1410. (These two flown by Plt Off G E Glenwright and Sgt W H Tape)". "Fighters over Tunisia " has that it was a flight of four of 152 Sqn Spitfires as is noted on page 222 of HMAW vol 3. There is a note in HMAW vol 5 that updates and corrections will be entered in Volume 6. Alex |

Looks more like RAF than French ? |
Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Yes. Part of a letter and L5.
|
Re: eBay: Allied intrest
"L5???, Has to be a Battle then, could be last letter "H" "M" or "N" of the Squadron code or a aircraft in Squadron letter.

Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Hi all,
Spitfite Mk.V serial number JK107: http://modelari.org/viewtopic.php?p=43627#p43627 Some W/Cdr plane? Faenor |
Re: eBay: Allied intrest
JK107 152 Sq went missing 24 April 1943 when it was lost to Flak near Massicault. It was flown by F/Sgt Utterson who was also MiA
The individual does not look German so the photos indicate the wreck was found later. From other photos around this time it seems No 152 Sq only used a single letter code, L. Cheers Stig |
Re: eBay: Allied intrest
F/Sgt. John UTTERSON - 1369512 - RAFVR , became a POW, at Stalag Luft L6, Heydekrug. POW number 1107. ( ref: RAF Commands database).
HMAW vol 3 ( page 535) has the loss of JK107 as being the 24th April 1943, one of four of 152 Sqdn's Spitfires lost that day. |

Re: eBay: Allied intrest
The man in the photo looks to me to be an American Air Force officer.
Wonder if he could be identified by someone ? |
Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Stig/Alex - again thank you for your info!!! I really appreciate your knowledge and especially how you share it - thank you :-)
And there is another photo of Spitfire from MTO - probably serial number ER726 and then it is plane from 81. SQ (pilot F/O William Sydney Large (RCAF) ) http://modelari.org/viewtopic.php?t=2823 Faenor |
Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Hi Faenor
First of all that photo is much harder to be certain about. Yes it might be ER726 as you say, but it is much more difficult to be certain. Actually I am much more interested in how you make the connection with W.S. Large and specifically ER726? None of my sources mentions that. The various aircraft forms seems to indicate this aircraft was lost on 2 Jan 1943. No unit listed anywhere except known to have been supplied to North Africa. Large was lost 1 Jan 1943 (aircraft unknown), so not impossible. What source(s) do you have? B Rgds Stig |

Odd that the authors of MAW 3 could not locate these details. Sounds solid enough. Cheers Stig |

Re: eBay: Allied intrest
That is Battle L5226/QT-Q of 142 Sqn, shot down on 19 May 40, with 1 killed and 2 POW.
It was a popular backdrop for German soldiers' photographs. |

Is it possible to link the codes of the V 156F with their actual No? For example this code 12 is not No 12. Cheers Stig |
Re: eBay: Allied intrest
I thought CR.714 7 was supplied to Finland as CA-552?

The visible codes on these aircraft are not their No. Code 7 was for instance No 23 Code 10 was No 11 I have no corresponding No for code 13 There is an extremely expensive book published about the Caudron fighters, but so far I cannot afford it. Too much else I need to buy instead. After all the CR.714 was a very minor type and achieved very little. Cheers Stig |

Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Thanks Bertrand
Does the author also give the second Caudron c/n No? I notice you (he) only seems to identify them by the company's main c/n line. Cheers Stig |
Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Stig
A similar photo is page 271 from L to R : n° 7-10-13 their c/n are those given above and written like that by the specialist B. Belcarz Bertrand |
Re: eBay: Allied intrest
I see
As you are no doubt aware there are two "schools" in France One claims the production aircraft were c/n 8533/1 to 8616/84 (Mihaly/Robinson + Internet site) and the other c/n 8533/2 to 8616/85 (Hauet) The "Ghost in the Machinery" is of course the prototype c/n 7875/01 and the "million dollar question" was 01 followed by No 1 or No 2? Pity Belcarz does not want to choose side. That itself makes me actually less interested in his book. Cheers Stig |
Re: eBay: Allied intrest
7 was the code of the aircraft in the unit, not the c/n.

Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Hi Ed,
Nice find with that second photo. A Fleet Air Arm Skua, L3048 'B', of 803 Squadron. It was force-landed intact in Norway on 25 April 1940, but later destroyed. There are other photos of it, but I have not seen this one before. Note that 'Oslo' is printed on the back of the photo. Regards, Martin Gleeson. |
Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Hi Martin,
I had faint hope that this aircraft would be identified with just the letter B. Thank you for the additional information. Best, Ed |
