Whitley N1362 I have with squadron code KNoB and with info, that dead crew was burried by Le Mans by allied soldiers. As I know, this planes started from Jersey to raid Turin (Italy). Does anyone have an ORB of this squadron from this period and can confirm / refute the letter of this machine? Maybe it is typo in my archive. Faenor |
Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Faenor,
The code is listed as Q in Op Order 96 in the 77 Sqn Appendices (AIR 27/659). This would of course only have been the planned aircraft. The F541 lists the aircraft lost as N1390 (no code listed), which is not correct (this aircraft survived until 1943 when it was lost with 24 OTU). It is therefore likely that N1390 was KN-Q. Comparison of the Op Orders in the appendices with the F541 supports this. Regarding code KN-B, a similar comparison would seem to indicate that this was N1508. Conducting a similar exercise with N1362 (the lost aircraft) gives KN-K as the likely code. So in the context of the original photo, the crashed aircraft was not N1362 as I suggested. Further ideas welcome! Andy |

- I believe that the photo does show P2727 but according to https://aviation-safety.net/wikibase/228832 (i know!!!) - but 2 things inconsistent the Sqn code is V (not F) and fact he forced landed not bailed out code defo P?7?7 and looks like a 2 Hawker Hurricane Mk.I P2727 (GZ-F) 32 Squadron, RAF: Written off (destroyed) when lost (failed to return) from a Combat Air Patrol over Dunkirk. Pilot bailed out and survived. According to the official Air Ministry file into the incident (File AIR 81/763): "Hurricane P2527 [*sic] crash landed near Calais, France, 2 June 1940. Sergeant Dermot Flynn: prisoner of war" Airborne from RF Biggin Hill, Bromley, Kent for a combat air patrol over Dunkirk. Shot down by enemy action (presumed by Flak/AAA, as no enemy claims made for this aircraft in air to air combat). Crew into the sea off Calais; pilot bailed out, and survived, but was captured, and taken as a PoW Crew of Hurricane P2727: Sergeant Dermot Flynn (pilot, #520659); bailed out, survived, captured, and became a PoW. Interned at PoW camp 357 (Kopernikus) as PoW no. 68 Also see http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/showthread.php?t=3586 |

I wonder from where the code GZ-F comes from? None of the listed sources have such a code, only GZ-? Since I only have Franks' book in the first edition, I don't know if there is such a code in the 2nd one. Only problem seems to be if the pilot bailed out or not. It certainly looks like a pilot has had some kind of control when making the landing we can see... Cheers Stig |

Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Re. Hurricane P2727.
I have the AIR 81/763 personnel casualty file for Sgt. Dermot Flynn, lost on 2 June 1940. There is almost nothing in it about the circumstances of his loss, except for his POW Questionnaire of May 1945 but even this has almost no detail. Under the line "Did you bale out, crash, force-land, ditch or get blown out ?" he wrote 'Crash land'. For the location he gave 'near Calais' and that he was made a prisoner the same day. He also wrote 'Hurricane Z' for his aircraft, but this is probably an understandable mistake after five years ! Hope this helps. Regards, Martin. |

RE:- 2271
Mention was made of Hurricane Z that crash landed, I three pic showing this aircraft with No. P 2737 on the tail. (For some reason cannot upload) maybe the plot was right?? |
Re: eBay: Allied intrest
That was interesting
I suppose you are still talking about P2727 and not P2737? Are your photos of the crash landed aircraft or is it still intact? Cheers Stig |

I refer to following....
