Re: eBAy: Captured german planes
The numbers and letters applied to the engine of the Me 262 appear to read: 61st. This may be a note to hand this aircraft off to the 61st Fighter Squadron(?) for ferrying or flight testing(?).

Re: eBAy: Captured german planes
Good eye, Ed! Obviously these were added after capture. I cannot see these on the port nacelle.

Wow, Thanks Michiel, Looks like it's a French machine (FFI, Group Dor, then GB 1/31 "Aunis") used against the Royan pockect (?). I'm not that sure though. Look under the wing, we can see the French cockade. Regards, Franck. Correction: He177 A-7 WNr.550256, used by Group Dor, effectively but transferred to USAF. On 28 November 1944 Col. Watson flew it. Ferried to Villacoublay by Col. Coster. Landed at Orly because of mechanical problems. Took off on 1 March 1945 (!) after repairs but took fire; destroyed. |

This is a bit at odds with what Phil Butler wrote in his War Prizes and also the He 177 book by Smith/Creek. Aircraft was an A-5 sub-version. Nothing about any French service (only overhauled where it was surrendered). Name of Coster was Lt Col Robert J. Koster and it was DBR on 28 Feb 1945 due to a ground loop caused by a burst tyre. May I ask what is your source? Cheers Stig |

Re: eBAy: Captured german planes
Thanks Franck
I think you should read the stuff one more time. There is a quote in English which says the same thing (partly) as the book by Phil Butler. The site also refers to a Vol 1 of Les Avions Allemands aux couleurs Francaises but fails to note the correction in vol 2 where the same authors correct themselves saying that no He 177 was ever flown by Armée de l'Air, only by SNCASE and CEV. The Airdoc books have received some criticism within French circles as being not 100% well researched (I find them never-the-less very useful), but if I have to chose, I would go with the version listed by Phil Butler. Cheers Stig |
Re: eBAy: Captured german planes
I think you should read the stuff one more time: well, do it first! In the english part it is written "This He-177A-5 (GP+RY/Wk-Nr 550256) was modified to become one of the few He 277/4-7 pattern aircraft in summer 1944."
Another point: Group Dor was a FFI resistant group organisation INSIDE the SNCASE to build/repair/fly the machine they have at Toulouse, it wasn't the French Air Force. It became GB 1/31 "Aunis" in December 1944. So yes, this machine wasn't flown by the French Air Force. And I wrote - considering the Royan pocket: "I'm not sure though". I'm not here to write book criticism specially about He177, but considering Butler Bf109's captions I will not give one penny for his books. ;) Regards, Franck. |

Re: eBAy: Captured german planes
Marc-André—
Thank you for your comments regarding the Ju 88G-6 WNr. 620 742. I am wondering about the location of the aircraft, however. You have indicated Fritzlar, Germany. I've checked USSTAF Technical Intelligence Report, A-338, for the inspection of Fritzlar on 8-9 April 1945. This inspection report states that 13 fairly intact aircraft were found, 11 of which were Bf 110s, one a Fi 156, and one a Ju 87. No Ju 88s were included in the report. Got any ideas about this? It's a bit of a puzzle, as Fritzlar was a highly active NJG 1 base towards the end of the war. You would have thought, however, that the U.S. inspection would have found the G 9 + FT if it were there. RA |
Re: eBAy: Captured german planes
Jim,
Delighted to hear from you. Hope all is well. Regarding your post, I wonder if this machine (and others) was flown in to Fritzlar on May 8th, about a month after US forces occupied the airfield. Cheers David |
Re: eBAy: Captured german planes
Hello David,
All is well, indeed. It is good to hear from you. If you are referring to the Me 262 in post # 2686, as far as I know, this is the A-1a W.Nr. 500210 "Yellow 17" of 3./JG 7 that was flown by Ltn. Hans Dorn into Fassberg on 8 May 1945 and surrendered to the British. On 27 May 1945 it was flown by F/Lt. Clive Gosling of 616 RAF Squadron, along with W/C. E.E. Warren Schrader in W.Nr. 110800 "White 7" to Schleswig-Land. On 29 May they proceeded to Lübeck-Blankensee where Schrader 'pranged' the "White 7". I suspect the writing on the nacelle is "616F". best regards, Jim |
Re: eBAy: Captured german planes
Hello everyone,I wonder if the numerals painted on the cowling could be the last four of the aircraft’s Werknummer, or it’s Jumo 004 Motornummer. The Jumo 004’s that I have documented so far have MNrn. in the form of three digits that identify the producer, followed by “301,” then the actual four-digit MNr. Example: 100 3011155 as mounted on an Ar 234 B-1.
Respectfully, Steve Sheflin |

A pity that we couldn't hv better resolution of last pictures from RCMilitaria.
5K+ wreck in african surroundings is a bit strange, never heard of any activity of the KG 3 in DAK, plane looking as an Do17...consistent of the equipment of the unit ...in 1940. Rémi |

Re: eBAy: Captured german planes
Grüß Gott David!
Pretty good conditions here. Winter finally came around mid-November after a miserable summer and September. The Ju 88G-6 WNr. 620 742 kinda puzzles me a little bit. As I wrote, NJG 1 used the field extensively during late 1944 and early 1945, yet the USAAF tech intell team that inspected it didn't report any Ju 88s there as of 8-9 Apr. 1945. Soooooooo. . . . Hope you're doing okay up there in Canada land. Guess you're retired now, that is, if the substrata haven't shifted! Jim |
