Hi there Gang,

I just chanced on this ultra rare shot of a WNF Diana Werk Tischnau-Tisnov built Bf 109 G-10, Erg.KG (J), being towed by an ox, probably at Illesheim, in February or March 1945.

Fols,

As often, chance has its share for finding new gems... Starting from this picture taken at Danzig-Langfuhr, and showing WNF built Bf 109 G-14 W.Nr. 51. ... "Schwarze 1", 10./JG 51,

I began scrutinizing the planes seen in the background until I chanced on what seems to be a Bf 109 K-4 W.Nr. 330xxx-331xxx "Schwarzer Winkel Welle", Stab IV./JG 51.

The combination of the chevron and wave symbol together as a tactical marking is something new for me at that late stage of the war. Any ideas about its meaning and any other examples ?

Hallo, Marc,
the combination <~+~ is strange indeed. For me it seems to have something to do with the IV.Gruppe and its staff. The double-wave of a late-war IV.Gruppe is quite different than the triple-wave of an early-war III.Gruppe.
The equivalent for the II.Gruppe could be <-+-, which is well known to us - but for the Geschwader staff.
But in case there´s a connection, other combinations with <|+| or <||+| would have quite a different meaning as a Stab marking for the III.Gruppe.
Just a thought. Could it be the late-war staff markings system was entirely changed after the introduction of a IV.Gruppe and the choice of 11,12,13 or 21,22,23 for the Staffel leaders?

Regards

Roland

Thanks Roland,

For your invigorating thoughts! You might well be on the right track, by tying down those special tactical markings with the introduction of a IV. Gruppe. It remain now a matter of patiently tracking down new photographic evidence... a tireless work indeed ;)

Thanks again
Marc

Thanks, Marc, but maybe those thoughts turn out to be some kind of dead-end-street.
The inscription "????berg" on "Black 1 + ~" reminds me of the Mühldorf-Mettenheim wrecks with "Flossenbürg" and "Pocking" chalked on the fuselages, Zerlegebetrieb and Reparaturbetrieb vice versa. Maybe we read some Northeast German equivalent.

Hi Guys,

My only reference being Michael Holm site, I have a question: Did IV./JG51 really had Bf109K-4?
But talking about Danzig-Langfuhr .. JG 1 really had.

Roland,

Highly interesting your pointer to the chalked inscription of @Schwarze 1". Thanks. Franck, check my JG 51 album on Flickr and there you'll see the one known K-4, "Schwarze 1", at Rønne, Denmark. So we can safely assume some K-4 found their way throughout JG 51...

Cheers

Hi,

Yes, IV./J.G. 51 had the Bf 109 K-4 at Danzig in February 1945. I'm sure the 109 experts can add more details.

Cheers,
Andrew A.
