Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Post 3559. This is B-24H 42-51112, 453BG H+ (+ = 733BS) lost 31 March 45 on Mission 920 to Brunswick rail yards (secondary target) ; note on photo says Salzgitter but MACR 13735 has near Hameln. Both in the area of target though. Black-white tail, Douglas line number 634 on nose. Pilot 1/Lt. R. C. Bussell.
Post 3557 photo 2. Evidently a B-24 crashed on one of the 2 Fifteenth AF missions to Bratislava oil targets in 1944 (June 16 and 20 Sept). She seems to be unpainted and the B-24s lost on 16th. were all camouflaged, 3 376BG and 1 450BG. 1 of the 2 lost on the 20th was NMF (42-50885) but this was no.89, 485BG in Hungary. Number 79 is a mystery but would be 4th sqn. Post 3558. No idea; tail artwork was quite common in the Fifteenth but the letter "X" would indicate Eighth AF; there is another shot showing the whole pin-up, maybe temporary as it's quite roughly done. Nick |

How can you tell this is No 401? All I can ID is the digits 88, but there were more Y-x88 No 301 Y-788 No 201 Y-688 (unlikely since it was used by the Luftwaffe) No 101 Y-588 Cheers Stig |

Seems more is known now than when I bought the LELA Presse book. Perhaps this is included in the new book by Ricco? Cheers Stig |

Post 3576.
Spitfire Vc WD-D 4FS / 52FG; may be MH605 "Ocean Rider", late 43 on Sicily and Corsica. Typical mixed US - RAF insignia, the tail flash often remained. Sorry "Ocean Rider" was the ship which delivered her to Casablanca arriving 10 Oct. 43 (total 65 Spits.) one of 60 "Ocean " class this one built in Maine; assigned to the Ministry of War Transport. Definitely WD-D. Nick |

Good Grief Bertrand
Never heard of that contraption before:o:o Can't say I ever had much interest in the subject. Bust, just as the British joke says: "I have tried it twice....the first....and the last time!" But that was some 50 years ago. Anyway, to make a bet, it surely must have been the best catch the Germans ever made.... :) Thanks Bertrand Stig |

Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Not sure how you read Jackson's pages Nick, nor how he interprets the known facts.
First of all the Greek Naval Air Service during the 1920s was a very small affair. In 1930 the Greek Army and Navy made a sort of amalgamation into something called EPA (Ethniki Polemiki Aeroporia) That made both Arms come together under a single Aviation Ministry (Ipourghion Aeroporias) The unification progressed up to 16 Nov 1935 when the Hellenic Air Force was formed (Elliniki Vassiliki Aeroporia) From that point there was no Naval Air Arm at all. So in 1941 this Avro 504O was 100% Air Force! For some, to me unknown, reason Jackson has interpreted my friend Ioannis answer to him that all the licence built Avro 504 in Greece was for the Navy. This is totally incorrect and something Ioannis would never had said. The six British built Avros the Navy ordered were a replacement for the Avro 504K they had used since WW 1 All the E prefixed aircraft were used by the EPA and later the EVA. Unfortunately the papers of the Greek National Aircraft Factory did not survive WW 2 meaning we don't know exactly how many Avros that were built. E40 is known as is E6 so probably around 40 seems a pretty safe bet Cheers Stig |
Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Stig,
Did the Avro records survive? They should list the deliveries. Best, Ed |
Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Well Ed
As far as I know feedback to England at that time only seems to have confirmed the orders made by the EPA. If anything further exists somewhere, I haven't seen anything reported. Greece is also a dead end it seems. Educated guesswork down in Greece believes two of the former Navy 504s became E30 and the second one possibly E25. Known serials are E3?, E6, E8, E13, E17, E20 - 25, E30, E33, E37 and E40 Cheers Stig |
