Photo 7 Maj. Mitchell and "happy warriors".
Relatively useless info but this is a line from Wordsworth's "Happy Warrior" ... "This is the happy Warrior, this is he That every man in arms should wish to be". Written after Admiral Nelson's death at Trafalgar. Often used in Military circles. Nick |

Thanks Ed.
Can someone put me out of my misery and identify the 87 Sqn Hurricane coded LK-M in the first link please? |
Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Hi Andy. Don't want to extend your misery but I'm pretty sure LK-M in photo 4th from bottom is same, 35" cocarde and extra-large letters. Not much help but the crate is labelled "Stuttgart" (?).
Serial probably the small (6") style often overpainted. Regards Nick https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/...rance-1939-40/ |

Excellent. Thanks Nick.

Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Hi Ed. I couldn't find "Blutehn" on any map though it's mentioned in the 447th inventory and a couple of times in the MACR; supposed to be a few kms. NW of Wittenberge. Maybe our German friends can help ?
Regards Nick |

With a little imagination one can say it is "in the neighbourhood" :) Cheers Stig |
Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Thanks Stig. A good bet on the name I think; that's about 20kms. from Wittenberge. Last seen at 52.45 - 13-15; Bluthen Decimal Degrees are 53.16-11.81 according to Maps. MACR reports location approx. 11 kms. from Wittenberge.
Near enough for me. Nick |
Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Location of forced-landing on several pages is given as " Road Karstaedt--Pulits about 500m. SW Bluethen"; German towns often spelt as pronounced rather than actual spelling eg....
Karstaedt = Karstadt Pulits = Pulitz Bluethen = Bluthen (on one page spelt "Luethen"). The German report (looks like Ku1554?) recorded markings as "MZ-E Snetterton" (ie. 413BS / 96BG Pathfinder) but certainly with 447th. when lost, pilot was Capt. Milton Esterline 447BG. As she was only with 96th. for a very short time evidently letters weren't changed which may explain the lack of Group symbol/letter on tail--being a PFF. Regards Nick |
