Nos. 2 and 14 are ex-Eighth AF captured.
2. B-17F 41-24585 (303BG PU-B "Wulfe Hound") MIA on Mission 25 to Rouen-Sotteville rail yards 12 Dec. 42; marked as DL-XC then to KG.200 2./Sta. as A3-AE at Finow (A3 was their code). 2./Sta. was responsible for special operations near to the combat zone, black undersides added. 14. P-47D 42-22490 (355FG YF-U "Beetle / Agnes") landed with low fuel (big headwind) on Mission 124 at Caen-Carpiquet 7 Nov.43, target Duren rail yards, pilot Lt. W.E. Roach POW. The 355th. lost 5, 3 POW 2 KIA (1 bailed in channel, missing). Went to 2./Sta. of Zirkus Rosarius for fighter evaluation, later had whole tail yellow plus spinner and undersides. Coded T9-FK, scrapped EOW. Regards Nick |

Photos 1 and 2. B-17G 42-31894/Z 306BG crash-landed home base Thurleigh 26 March 44, Mission 280 to V1 sites in Pas de Calais; pilot was Lt. G.R. Haywood Jr. (369BS). Large letter is typical for 306th, no codes here. 3. B-24J (Ford) 42-50800 not sure of Group but condition suggests Pacific, possibly 30BG. 4. B-17F 42-3292 "Mary Pat" ( pilot Lt. Ruel G. Weikert's wife) 385BG Gt. Ashfield; flew 12 missions in "Pat". B-24 returned US 25 Nov. 44. 5. B-17G 42-31917 "Off Spring" (baby on spring) 385BG. On Mission 469 to Munich 12 July 44 caught prop-wash, nosed up and collided with 42-102606 "Curley's Kids" and cut in 2. Crashed Luxembourg, there is a memorial at Perle; MACRs 7507 and 7489. Nick |

Hi Stig. Yes serial is on B24bestweb, no other details though; he's got 44-40459 as "Ain't Misbehaven" (with Vargas pin-up) 861 / 493 then 854 / 491 in Sept.44. The data panel is readable as 459.
Regards Nick EDIT. "SOXO 2685" is written under the side window so Eighth AF anyway. (incidentally are you "Stig Jarlerik of Goteborg" who replied to Thomas Nilsson's article on Thulin in "Cross and Cockade" 14-1 1983 ? ) |

I should have the B-24 site listed somewhere. Don't know why I can't find it. And yes I am the very same Stig Jarlevik (note the spelling) Rik mean rich in Swedish and is most unfitting in case of me while vik means bay. Confess I don't look much that either but please blame it on my father and his brother... :D Jarl on the other hand was, in the old days, a title to a man very close to a King. #2 is of course the often-photographed Whitley N1377 of 102 Sqn, which force-landed at Spijkenisse in the early hours of 27 July 1940 while returning from a raid on Mannheim.
The crew was taken POW. |

Photos of L5503/QT-L, lost on 23 August 1940, show the aircraft with a different fin flash. Could it be K9333, lost on 14 May 1940? |

Hi Andy. The photos I've seen of these 2 show the same fin flash, over the whole fin and full height (ordered May 1 1940); as the back of Ed's photo says "St. Loup Terrier" (in Ardennes between Reims-Sedan) more likely to be K9333 shot down at Ecly near there on May 14. L5503 reported shot down 23/24 Aug. at Boulogne ( attacking harbour).
The tall fin marking was ordered reduced in height in Aug. but obviously not a priority to update. Regards Nick |

Early "Birdcage" F4U-1 VMF.213 date of June 43 would suggest 02350 "7" ex.-VMF.124 "13", still visible. Named after Cupp's wife Daphne Snider (her name is on his grave marker in Manassas VA). Photos 1--2.
Date given is 23 Feb. but only Eighth AF ops. were a fighter sweep and a few B-17 leaflet sorties. 3 B-24s were lost the day before, 22nd. This was Mission 230 primary was Gotha but 2nd. Div. was re-called due to bad weather though some bombed Targets of Opportunity. 1.(67BS/44BG) B-24D 42-72865 / F-bar "F for Freddie" shot down Holland, 1 KIA 9 POW. 2. (67BS/44BG) B-24J 42-100402 /M-bar probably came down in N. Sea. 10 KIA. 3. (733BS/453BG) B-24H 41-28615 /T+ exploded over Holland 10 KIA. Most likely the B-24D, also no nose turret visible. All 3 Olive Drab, codes only standard from March (67 = NB, 733 = F8). Nick |

Photo 4. A famous B-24H (Ford) 42-52106 "Sunshine" (449BG).
Damaged on Mission 39 to Bolzano rail yards 29 March 44, didn't quite make Switzerland and landed intact at Venegono. Captured by Germans and used for propaganda including filming her. The photo believed taken at Bergamo near Milan when with 2./KG200 ( the Southern Detachment was code-named "Carmen"), clearly marked German insignia and yellow band. Originally marked "5 - barred A", then full 47Wing designators; black triangle in white disc (Wing), black "3" in white disc (3rd. Group in Wing) and "5" on rudder-still visible. Nick |
