Me 109 E-4 B ????

Hello!
I have a loss, where it says that it was a Me 109 E4 B.
It was a white 8 and Wnr. 3911

The pilot was an Uffz. S Helmberger and was missing in action on the 12. March 1941 and belonged to II./JG 54

What does "B" stand for?
Is the mission known today?

Thank you

Christian

"B" stands for Bomb or bomb carrier. 109s were equipped to carry bombs in late 1940, and for the a/c that had not originally been built to carry this equipment, the suffix 'B' was added.

I glanced at John Foreman's "1941 - The turning point, part 1" but didn't notice your a/c for 12 March 1941.

Hello Christian,

The Bf 109E with the WNr.3911 was originaly build as an E-1 by Arado Warnemünde around November 1940. Apparently some time later, it was upgraded to E-4/B standard.
In Prien's JFV series the loss is recorded as follows
Bf 109E-4/B WNr.3911 12.03.41 4./JG54 Uffz. Simon Heimberger (†), Flak - Absturz, über der See N Cherbourg - 100% ws.8+–

best regards,
Tomislav

George,

3./Erpr. Gr. 210 had Bf 109 E-4/Bs from the beginning of July 1940...

Did these E-4/Bs use C3 fuel?

The "B" modification included the ETC but not the ability to carry droptanks which appeared with the E-7.
