Re: Photos 8-9
Anyone who has an idea which unit this Ju 87B belonged to?
http://www.ebay.de/itm/ws/eBayISAPI....m=261019901111 The emblem is unidentified by Ketley/Rolfe in the first edition of Luftwaffe emblems (have not yet received the updated volume) As usual crews have a habit of obscuring important details,in this case the unit code. To me it looks like B1 which only increases my confusion, since Rosch places this with something he calls Rest-Kdo St.G.1 (whatever that was...) formed in 1942. Since the photo is belived to have been taken during the Polish Campaign in 1939, things does not exactly fit.... Cheers Stig |

AFAIK a Restkommando is a rear party, not a formal unit. It's a group that stays behind to clear up, e.g. making any "lame duck" aircraft flyable, when the main body moves. Alternatively a group that stays put to look after servicing/logistics at a rear base while the main body is deployed to a forward airfield for operations.
The opposite case is a Vorkommando, which goes ahead to prepare for a move by the main body. |
Re: Photos 8-9
Hello,
Code could also be E1. The people may be dressed for cold weather, so this seems unlikely to be 9.39. I've discussed this with one of our lead Polish researchers on the EoE project and his conclusion: "This must be a training unit. They were stationed at Deblin and Warsaw-Okecie." On the subject of the new Ketley markings book, I just got my copy, and, although I like many features of it, including the layout format, and there is some new information, I was disappointed to find during a quick look, over a dozen significant errors or omissions for the 1939-40 period. These have already been discussed and resolved on this or the LEMB message boards, some a long time ago. Obviously Mr. Ketley doesn't read these boards. I'm tempted to start an errata list on this board for the publication, which I consider one of the key reference works in our field. Overall, there is no question that Barry Ketley has created an indispensable reference work, and I greatly applaud his efforts, but this new edition isn't the up-to-date, definitive reference work that the introduction claims. I know that there is another team, involving Peter Petrick and others in Germany, that is working on what I assume is a similar book. I just don't know when that one is due for publication. Does anyone know? I still have a lot of unresolved questions on the subject for the 1939-40 period. Regards, |

Good morning to all!
http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...m=251057038663 Two questions: 1) His face is familiar, but I can not remember who is this General...(Erhard Milch???) 2) What kind of flying suit is he wearing? I never saw this badge on the left sleeve. Any Luftwaffe suit especialist help us identifying this flying suit/rank badge? Adriano Baumgartner |

Re: Photos 8-9
Thanks
Larry Indeed it would be nice with an errata file on Ketley here at TOCH. I also contemplated that the code could be E1, but most known E prefixes were used by Erprobungs units later and of course E1 is unknown so far. Reason I put this in the Polish time frame is that the style of the photo and the way the photo was taken resembles some of the earlier ones listed by Ed above and where the back side in fact states Poland. Early in the war unit emblems were very common and the longer the war lasted they became more and more out of fashion, sort of. The emblem used here, to me, also suggest an early period rather than a late one. Finally we have the code F1, which I agree it does not look like, but shadows have been playing tricks with us before, and if so it would be no problems at all being used on a Stuka. Nick Thanks for explaining what the Rest-Kdo was. Does not really sound like a unit needing any combat unit code/emblem. Sounds a bit unlikely both having used the code B1 and a badge. Cheers Stig |

2) It is very similar to the rank badge worn by Generalfeldmarschall Erhard Milch in a visit to JG 2 "Richthofen" in the summer of 1943 at Vannes, France. See page 43 of Luftwaffe im Focus, Edition No 5. Ed |
