First Fortress Mk. I shot up (August 41)

Fortress Mk. I AN523/D (P/O Sturmey) was badly shot up by Bf 109s and Bf 110s over the North Sea, on 16 August 1941. Having crashed on landing, it is the first B-17 destroyed by the Luftwaffe ever.
Can anyone shed light on the German units that took part in the interception?

Thanks in advance.

Chris

Hi,
According to "B-17 Master Log" AN523/40-2055 was damaged over Brest, not North Sea; Brest perfectly matched with claim of 1./JG 2 pilot, StFw Erwin Kley.

Hmm! My mistake.
Yes, it does match. Excellent.
Thanks.

Gizmo is right-WP-D was shot up by Kley (8th kill) and crash-landed back at Roborough. I have a photo of him if any use

No, AN523 WP-D 40-2056 definitely lost 16/08/41
Intercepted by five Bf109s at 32,000 ft over Brest, received 26 separate attacks over 23 minutes and the enemy fire punctured one fuel tank, the bomb doors were thrown open, flaps dropped, the trim tab was shot away, the tail wheel hung half down and an aileron and the rudder were badly damaged. Crash landed Plymouth (Roborough) on return, overshot the end of the runway without brakes and caught fire.

AN525 WP-D lost 8th September 41 along with two others going to Oslo

Where does bird-dog come from?

Regards

Martin

I think we have a difference in definitions. The Oslo raid saw the first B-17 shot down. The Brest raid saw the first lost as a result of enemy action, but not shot down as such.
