Unfortunately, not quite. Martin Pegg has asked me to post up a correction on his behalf as he is not a TOCH member. He would wish to make members aware that the surname of Hans-Günther Marufka should be spelt Marufke. This was an error in his original Classic book which was pointed out to him by Franz Oswald and for which he acknowledges full responsibility. Unfortunately, from Martin's perspective, this error has been subsequently compounded by authors simply using his work uncredited and not undertaking their own original research. This is not a slight at Evgeny who has credited Martin in his posting.

Hi Steve,

We sure hope your brickbat isn't being hurled in our direction. We have the name spelled correctly and we did acknowledge Martin's book in our bibliography in our Introduction.

Pegg, Martin.
Hs 129 Panzerjäger! (Burgess Hill (West Sussex): Classic Publications, 1997). ISBN: 0-9526867-16

Larry - Absolutely not. The originality of the efforts of yourself and Doug is plain for all to see and I'm certainly looking forward to the publication of your airfield database when it's ready.

Martin's frustration is with certain publications which have simply plaigarised his work and brought nothing new to the table in terms of original research, particularly when an inadvertent error is simply repeated across publications.

Yes, we certainly agree, Steve. There are numerous serial- and one-off plagiarizers out there who do not even know how to spell ARCHIVE much less ever having been in one or having dealt with one. These charlatans are a disgrace and they should be tracked down and punished. However, there is a flip-side to this coin. The international copyright laws do allow up to 10% of a book's content to come from another published source, provided it is spread out throughout the book and not in clumps. Each use must also be identified and credited in footnotes or source notes. Unfortunately, as you, Martin and others know, certain countries do not acknowledge the international copyright conventions and refuse to prosecute violators. Regretable, but true.

Totally agree and equally it takes time and effort. I have to admit I was very impressed when Frank Marshall took a stand on behalf of his Bf 109T research a couple of years back.

I heard about that but I don't know the details. I hope he won his case!

Ah yes, Steve. I remember the thread now. It's been a while. F.M. did in fact win and the culprit was Kagero. I am surprised he got a lawyer to handle it, so I am assuming it was a strongly worded letter to the publisher that was quickly settled without protracted negotiations or the involvement of the courts. Attorneys do not like plagiarism cases because they rarely are won and when they are the award is usually not large enough to pay the plaintiff and attorney an acceptable sum, unless the book sold in millions of copies, that is. Anyway, two thumbs up for F.M. He was very courageous to go after the defendant and win a victory for all non-fiction authors.
