Is this a Bomb ?
 

Hello,
I have been advised that this may be a Bomb. But what kind and which Nation used these, UK, USA, Germany or Russia ?
As it stands its length is about 55 cm so only a small Bomb.
Question is - is this in fact the remnants of a Bomb or is it something else ???

Looks more like a WWI artillerie round to me.

It is an artillery shell. Type unknown. Country of origin unknown.

Hello Rudu and Ed,
An artillerie round.
Do you both agree on it being a WW1 weapon ?
Is it possible that it was used in WW2 ?

It would take some time to track this particular shell down. Its primary identifying feature is the three rotating bands.
Two on the upper body and one on the base. The fuse at the top appears to be missing. Here's a place to start:

I'm not an expert on artillerie ammunition but many different WWI ammo was still in use at the start of WWII.

Thanks Rudi, I did think that smaller European countries may have done so, but also expect that we may have, but somewhere I seem to remember that we dumped a lot of munitions in some African countries after WW1.

Hi Guys,
Wow, where did you find this ? It is an 8 inch (208-210 mm) artillery shell and judging from the rotating bands, it is WW1. Was it fence post or planter ? ;-)

Hi Alex,

I guess I just grew up on too many Military bases. Artillery shells are used as decoration all over the place especially around Flag poles where the fuses used to be are replaced by eyebolts with chains run thru them, Markers around monuments etc... Yes I have also seen large caliber shells (not shell casings) with flowers growing where the fuse would be.

I also suspect the picture you posted is an 8 inch Parrot rifle round from the Civil war era. Plenty of pictures of those from Fort Sumpter.
