Some enlarged and 'tweaked' known photos of Me 262s
Some photos on the internet have enough resolution to enlarge them and 'tweak' the colours, light and 'clarity'. This is the first of a number of a number of posts:
http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/album....&pictureid=787 1. Me 262 V3 000003 PC+UC. Manfred Jurleit on p. 15 of Strahljaeger Me 262 Die Technikgeschichte, (1992), gives the caption for this photo as "Vorbereitung der Me 262 V-3 zum ersten Flug" [18 July 1942]. However, Smith & Creek, Me 262 Volume One, (1997), p. 103, says "This photo is thought to show the Me 262 V3 after it was rebuilt following the accident on 11 August 1942 when it was badly damaged. The aircraft returned to flight testing on 20 March 1943 and could be distinguished by the painting of its Versuchs (experimental) number on the fin." http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/album....&pictureid=788 2.Me 262 A-1a W.Nr. 170059. Smith & Creek, Me 262 Volume Two, (1998), p. 238, captioned this photo as: "On 3 August 1944 Oblt. Hans-Guenter Mueller of Erprobungskommando 262 flew this Me 262, W.Nr. 170059, fom Leipheim to Lechfeld. He is seen here standing on the wing just prior to the flight and before operational markings had been applied to the aircraft." http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/album....&pictureid=789 3. Under the heading SPECULATION, this photo may depict Me 262 A-2a W.Nr. 130180 9K+BL and Me 262 A-2a W.Nr. 130026 9K+AL taking off from Schwabisch-Hal for Juvincourt on 23 August 1944. However, "A" was seriously damaged in a notlandung near Charleville-Mezieres. If so, then "A" was hurriedly evacuated by road at the end of the month to Volkel for repairs. best regards, Jim |

8. Me 262 V5 W.Nr. 262 000 0005 PC+UE with a fixed tricycle undercarriage. Used 12 to 25 July 1943 to test two Rheinmetall-Borsig R 109-502 RATO engines of 500 KG thrust each to reduce take-off distances. It was found that by angling the rockets by 8 degrees to the flight attitude the boosters could reduce take-off by 340 metres to 510 metres. 27. A line-up of Me 262s of III./EJG 2 at Lechfeld, probably late December 1944 or very early January 1945. Note the pattern of the kaulquappe (tadpole) camouflage of experimental wooden tail fins. The nearest aircraft being towed is a Me 262 a-2a (one white gun rectangle) White 1, possibly W.Nr. 170047. http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/album....&pictureid=818 28. On the evening of 29 April 1945, at about 1800 hrs., Ofw. Rothert of 2./Fl.U.G. 1 transferred the same Me 262 A-2a (one white gun rectangle) White 1 from München-Brunnthal to Innsbruck-Reichenau where this photo was taken. http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/album....&pictureid=816 29. A view of the starboard side of White 1 showing a fresh late-war camouflage has been newly applied. It seems to have consisted of an overspray of the fuselage, followed by a squiggle pattern of dark colour and a new yellow band, then another light overspray of an opaque anti-dazzle paint. http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/album....&pictureid=817 30. A view of the port side of White 1. Note that the "white S", signifying that it is not suitable for combat, has been moved back to below the horizontal stabilizer while it is missing from the starboard side. http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/album....&pictureid=819 31. Another kaulquappe-tailed Me 262 A-1a of III./EJG 2 White 4, possibly W.Nr. 170306. |

Re: Some enlarged and 'tweaked' known photos of Me 262s
Hi Dan,
http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/album....&pictureid=820 The above is an enlargement from a photo previously posted on the web of page 414 in Smith & Creek, Me 262 Volume Two, (1998), whose caption identifies it as "W.Nr. 130017 'White 4'". To my eye, the original photo in their book shows a "306" beneath the horizontal stabilizer. On consulting the Production Log, I find on page 69: "170306 Me 262 A-1a. ... Uffz. Helmut Schmidt of 10./EJG 2, was injured on7 January 1945, in the Lechfeld area, while landing. 'White 4' was 90 percent destroyed." This was why I captioned it "possibly W.Nr. 170306". best regards, Jim |
Re: Some enlarged and 'tweaked' known photos of Me 262s
Jim, I was lucky enough to have a very good copy of that photo before being lost by hard drive failure, and it was 170061 plain as day. Granted, that was just one photo of one White 4, and there were many, as with all the other numbers. Just FYI. Take care!

Re: Some enlarged and 'tweaked' known photos of Me 262s
Jim,
Dan is correct - there is a clearer version of that photos that reveals the Werknummer. Note that since it was given a replacement experimental wooden fin and rudder the Werknummer was re-applied in a lower position as seen on 130xxx series machines. Best, David |
Re: Some enlarged and 'tweaked' known photos of Me 262s
Dan and David,
Thank you very much for this correction. It is appreciated. Jim |

32. The early Me 262 S series aircraft were used as conversion trainers for pilots from III./ZG 26 who were to become Erprobungskommando 262 under Hauptmann Werner Thierfelder. These Me 262s had an overall coat of RLM 76 light blue and a red nose number. This photo shows Me 262 S1 W.Nr. 130006 VI+AF Red 1 in flight. http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/album....&pictureid=823 33. EKdo. 262's aircraft were delivered in the spring and early summer 1944. They are distinguished by the RLM 74/75 grays as upper camouflage over the RLM 76 undercoat and undersides, including on the forward engine cowls. Being a "proving" unit the individual aircraft numeral was placed on the nose. Being also a training and conversion unit, they carried a yellow band on the rear fuselage behind the cockpit as III./EJG 2 did later. http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/album....&pictureid=824 34. Another photo of the same line-up of aircraft. Note that at this time (summer 1944), W.Nr. 170071 White 2 had the top gun port sealed and had only one white gun rectangle , thus making it a Me 262 A-2a. http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/album....&pictureid=825 35. A still from a training film made in 1944 shows a member of the ground crew using the pull rope of the Riedel starter to activate the Junkers Jumo 109-004 turbojet. In this photo, Me 262 A-1a W.Nr. 170041 White 10 has two white gun rectangles and lacks the ETC-503 bomb rack seen in other photos. http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/album....&pictureid=826 36. Me 262 S12 W.Nr. 130017 White 4 was the aircraft that Ltn. Alfred Schreiber was flying on 26 July 1944, the day he claimed the first aerial victory by a Me 262. |

37. It is known for certain that this is a photograph of a Me 262 A-1a of Kommando Nowotny. On 8 November 1944, near Achmer, Lt. James W. Kenny of the 357th FG shot up W.Nr. 110404 White 7, causing Oblt. Franz Schall to bail out. Kenny then photographed the empty Me 262. These photos show the features of the kommando's aircraft: 1. very dark upper camouflage (including the forward nacelle cowls) whose demarcation with the RLM undersides is very low on the fuselage; 2. the individual aircraft numeral on the nose signifying a training or proving unit; and 3. the absence of the yellow band on the rear fuselage that indicates a unit is converting pilots to fly jets. http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/album....&pictureid=828 38. Oblt. Franz Schall, staffelkapitan of 2./Kdo. Nowotny stands in front of his Me 262 A-1a W.Nr. 110479 White 1 conversing with his crew chief. Because this aircraft was damaged on 28 October, Schall was flying White 7 on 8 November. http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/album....&pictureid=829 39. Ofw. Helmut Baudach of 2./Kdo. Nowotny stands in front of what appears to be White 6. http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/album....&pictureid=830 40. Me 262 A-1a W.Nr. 110389 White 2 was being flown by Ltn. Herbert Spangenberg of 1./Kdo. Nowotny out of Achmer on 6 November 1944, when after combat with a P-51 of 357th FG, he ran out of fuel and attempted a notlandung at the factory airfield of Weser Flugzeugwerke at Lehmwerder. He was fired at by German flak on approach and overshot, crashing into a shack causing 50 % damage. Note that the yellow band has been overpainted. http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/album....&pictureid=831 41. Under sheer speculation, these may be White 11 and White 10 of Kommando Nowotny. |

42. An air-to-air photo of Major Erich Hohagen flying the now Me 262 A-1a (two white gun rectangles) W.Nr. 170071 White 2 of III./EJG 2 at Lechfeld on 15 November 1944. (See O'Connell, pp. 54-55.) Note the natural metal forward nacelle cowl characteristic of aircraft of III./EJG 2. http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/album....&pictureid=833 43. A line-up of aircraft of III./EJG 2: Me 262 A-1a White 10 possibly W.Nr. 110926; White 9 possibly W.Nr. 111617 and White 6 possibly 170054. As sheer speculation, these three may be the aircraft at the far end of the line-up of kaulquappe-tailed Me 262s at Lechfeld. http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/album....&pictureid=834 44. Me 262 A-1a W. 110956 White 17 captured at Lechfeld at the end of April 1945. http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/album....&pictureid=835 45. This is a colour photo of the fuselage of Me 262 A-1a W.Nr. 110530 White 26 of 10./EJG 2 that made a notlandung on 6 February 1945 northeast of Landshut. (See O'Connell, p.85). http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/album....&pictureid=836 46. Me 262 A-1a W.Nr. 111857 was found at Innsbruck-Hotting in May 1945. It had been listed as with JV44 at München-Riem on 26 April 1945. However the natural metal forward nacelle cowls indicate that it was originally with III./EJG 2 and the photo shows where the numeral on the nose was painted over. O'Connell, p. 140, suggests it had been White 5. "Ferried from München-Riem by Obstlt. Heinz Bär on 1 or 2 May 1945." |

Gents,
The small digit under the JG 7 Geschwaderwappen is green with a white outline as seen on other Stab/JG 7 machines. Known machines are Green 1 (x3), Green 2, Green 3, Green 4 and Green 5. Strength returns indicate the possibility of a sixth aircraft. Cheers David |

#55 - what is the significance of what appears to be 17 painted at the base of the rudder of 111588?
|
Re: Some enlarged and 'tweaked' known photos of Me 262s
It has been suggested that, as this symbol with different numbers have been seen on other Me 262s, that it was used either in the assembling process or by repair shops to match parts to the proper aircraft.

This view of probably W.Nr. 110662 Red 3 shows the single white gun rectangle and bomb rack of an A-2a. These photos confirm the information about its armament found in the document dated "21.o4.45" at Prague seen on page 146 of Brown etal., Messerschmitt Me 262 Production and Arado Ar 234 Final Operations, (JaPo, 2012). |
Re: Some enlarged and 'tweaked' known photos of Me 262s
What documentation is there that this is 110662?

Re: Some enlarged and 'tweaked' known photos of Me 262s
Hi Dan,
You are right. There is no photographic evidence of the werknummer. However, since it matches the description in the document mentioned in #72 and place of operation of this unit at the end April 1945, to me it quacks like a duck. I have changed the captions using the word "probably". best regards, Jim |
Re: Some enlarged and 'tweaked' known photos of Me 262s
Dan,
Check the folder I sent you for complete information on this machine. It’s Werknummer and E-Kenn. are confirmed via documents and photographs. Best, David |
Re: Some enlarged and 'tweaked' known photos of Me 262s
110662 Call sign GT+LH. Me 262 A-1a. This A-1a was test flown by Hptm. Toni Lotter at Neuburg on 4 January 1945 at 12:29-12:43. While stationed with I./KG(J) 54, it made six takeoffs totaling two hours and ten minutes at Giebelstadt in January 1945, where it was still in service on 5 February 1945. An Ultra intercept on 1 March of a I./KG 51 document stated that it would be serviceable on 2 March.
This is what I have on it, no mention of Moosburg. I am extremely careful about Me 262 WN'r. You have both given me information that will take me some time to analyze. Thank you! |

73. Me 262 A-1a W.Nr. 111690 White 5 of 1./JG 7 was flown from Zatec (Saaz), Czechoslovakia to British-held Fassberg, Germany on 8 May 1945 by Oblt. Fritz Stehle, staffelkapitän of 2./JG 7. Note the small RAF roundel with the outer yellow ring and the lack of RAF fin flashes common to Fassberg Me 262s. It was given Air Ministry No. 80 and ferried by S/Ldr. Tony F. Martindale on 5 August 1945 from Fassberg via Twente to Melsbroek, the next day to Manston and on the 7th to RAE Farnborough. http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/album....&pictureid=871 74. Me 262 A-1a W.Nr. 110800 White 7 of 9./JG 7 was flown from Zatec (Saaz) to Fassberg on 8 May 1945 by Uffz. Günther Engler of 2./JG 7. It was given British markings and flown from Fassberg to Lübeck-Blankensee by W/C. Warren E. Schrader on 27 May 1945. http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/album....&pictureid=872 75. Me 262 A-1a W.Nr. 500210 Yellow 17 (note the Red 7 on the nosegear door) of 3./JFG 7 was flown from Zatec (Saaz) to Fassberg on 8 May 1945 by Ltn. Hans Dorn of 1.(?)/JG 7. Like White 5 above, it does not carry the JG 7 wappen but has its blue/red RVT bands on the rear fuselage. It was flown from Fassberg to Lübeck by F/Lt. Clive Gosling on 27 May 1945. Likely transferred from Lübeck to Schleswig in early June, it was ferried from Schleswig via Twente to Melsbroek on 9 June 1945 then to RAE Farnsborough via Manston the same day. |

76. Me 262 A-1a/Jabo or A-2a W.Nr. 500200 Black X of 2./KG 51 was flown from Zatec (Saaz) to Fassberg on 8 May 1945 by Fj. Ofw. Hans Fröhlich of E.Schwarm Me 262 des G.d.S. It was flown from Fassberg via Twente to Melsbroek by S/Ldr. Tony F. Martindale on 28 August 1945. That same day, Lt. Cdr. Eric Brown, RN, flew it from Melsbroek to Manston. On 6 September it reached RAE Farnborough. http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/album....&pictureid=874 77. Me 262 A-1a W.Nr. 111007? Yellow or Green 5 of III./JG 7 was flown from Zatec (Saaz) to Fassberg on 8 May 1945 by Uffz. Anton Schöppler of 11./JG 7. Note that the third digit of the werknummer has been shaded in on both sides of the tailfin. So far I have seen no evidence that it was flown out of Fassberg. |
Re: Some enlarged and 'tweaked' known photos of Me 262s
Thanks again for posting these, I'm really enjoying this thread.
Regarding #(77), I note you have captioned the actual photo as 110007. |
Re: Some enlarged and 'tweaked' known photos of Me 262s
Thanks, Andy. My bad! I've corrected the caption on the photo since 110007 is not a valid werknummer and I believe Dan O'Connell got it right. See pages 121-122 in Me 262 Production Log.

W.Nr.110007 is clearly and readable. The rest is just speculation

For what it is worth, Philippe Saintes (in his Lela Presse Les pertes des Me 262)
also lists this one as WNr 110007 Cheers Stig |
