JG 300 and JG 3 airbattle on August 23rd, 1944
 

Looking for details about that day since I found some information about Pilots of JG 300 that got lost on that day.

Uffz. Hans Götze, 16./JG 3, FW 190 A-8/R2, Werk Nr.: 681363, KIA near Markersdorf

Fw. Wilhelm Mlodoch, 7./JG 300, FW 190 A-7, Werk Nr.: 430698, KIA near Annaberg

Ofhr. Hieronymus Degener, 7./JG 300, FW 190 A-8, Werk Nr.: 171452, KIA near Krieglach ????

Does anyone have information about that day (23/8/1944) in general and any of these pilots? Thanks!

Are you sure about the date for the J.G.300 losses? Or the unit affiliation?

The reason I am asking is that it seems that no personnel losses were reported for the entire J.G.300 on this date...

If you have the NVM's for these guys it would be very interesting if you could post a scan, as these losses then would not have been recorded by the GenQu6Abt.

..yes checked also...but a couple of days later...there were massive fighting with great losses of allied bombers...

Tony Woods does have claims for Stab/JG300 plus IV/JG3 plus Stab IV/JG3 plus 5. and 10./JG300 - 12 B-24s plus two P-51s and one P-38. Hardly 'massive' bust significant to the ones that were shot down

I'm checking but believe the actual losses were 7 B-24s plus a Mustang and a P-38. 15th AF records harder to verify.

Leutnant Franz Kaefer of 15./JG 3 killed in aerial combat in Fw 190 A-8/R8 (W.Nr. 680 794) crashed at Trampen
Unteroffizier Rolf Zimmermann of 15./JG 3 killed in aerial combat in Fw 190 A-8/R8 (W.Nr. 680 727) crashed at Wiener-Neustadt
Feldwebel Kurt Gren of 16./JG 3 killed in aerial combat in Fw 190 A-8/R8 (W.Nr. 681 277) crashed at Wiener-Neustadt
Unteroffizier Hans Götze of 16./JG 3 killed in aerial combat in Fw 190 A-8/R8 (W.Nr. 681 363) crashed at Markersdorf

Unteroffizier Albert Wollensah of 6./JG 300 killed in aerial combat in Fw 190 A-8 "Yellow 8" (W.Nr. 174 122) over Wiener-Neustadt
Leutnant Hieronymus Deegner of 7./JG 300 killed in aerial combat in Fw 190 A-8 "White 1" (W.Nr. 171 452)
Feldwebel Wilhelm Mlodoch of 7./JG 300 killed in aerial combat in Fw 190 A-7 "White 2" (W.Nr. 430 698) over Krieglach/Wien

IV.(Sturm)/JG 3 claimed eight B-24 four-engined bombers shot down and one HSS. II.(Sturm)/JG 300 claimed two P-51 fighters and the Geschwaderstab of JG 300 claimed three more. II./JG 5 and II./JG 27, flying as top cover, claimed one B-24 bomber (by 6./JG 27) but lost three pilots (two from II./JG 5 and one from II./JG 27). 10./JG 300 claimed the P-38 twin-engined fighter.

Interesting.

The II./J.G.300 haven't listed these at all, if the clerk hasn't missed the date when entering them into the loss records.

I have 9 aircraft losses for 22. august 1944 and 5 for the 24. august 1944, but noen for the 23.!

Can anyone shed light on the action for these two days so we can establish if there are errors in the record keeping here?

Of course, it is not unlikely that the records have been changed but that they haven't changed the dates in the summary loss records.

just out of curiosity, what were the targets for the US bombers on that day?
Wr. Neustadt, Vienna, any other in Eastern Austria?

The USAAF Chronology for the Fifteenth Air Force states that on 23 August 1944: "In Austria, 472 B-24s and B-17s supported by P-51s and P-38s bomb the S industrial area of Vienna, the Wiener-Neudorf aircraft engine factory, Vosendorf oil refinery, and Markersdorf Airfield, and attack targets at Ferrara, Italy, missing a river bridge but hitting a synthetic rubber factory."

Thank you Leo for the information.
I was asking because first, this is the area where I live and second, an Austrian army officer, Markus Reisner, has published a nearly 1000 page history of all the aerial attacks on Wr. Neustadt, providing great detail about the raids.
I will have a look if I can find some more info on that date in his book as well.

Are you asking for only the German claims? I can give you the 325th FG of the 15th AF claims, victories and losses, for any of these dates mentioned.
