Me 109 with unknown emblem, Fw 190 Wk 171680 and other photos

Hello,

I have some new exclusive photo preview of an upcoming Tonelli auction on my blog: http://lwcollectibles.blogspot.com/

There is a very interesting photo of a Me 109 with an emblem on the cowling that I haven't seen before. Does anybody know more about it?

Also, there is a photos of Fw 190 WkNr. 171680 (the first "1" is not 100% sure). Does anybody know anything about its history?

Regards
Roger

Hi Roger,
Looks like an emblem of KG 55 according to page 55 in "Luftwaffen Embleme 1939-1945" by Ketley and Rolfe.

Hmmm..thought I've seen something like it before.......Page 87 in Kagero Monographs No.29 shows two pictures of what is captioned as a III/KG(J)55 Bf 109 G-6, W.Nr. 4645??, Yellow 25. It has this emblem on the port side of the cowling.
A colour profile at the back (no page No.) claims the aircraft was found at Straubing in April 1945. Here it is given away as a "G-14".

W.Nr.4645?? ought to be an Erla built G-14.

Hi Pawel and Göran,

That makes sense as KG55 (or KG(J)55)! I just checked http://www.ww2.dk/air/kampf/kg55.htm: KG55 was equiped with Me 109 G in the second half of 44 and in 45. I haven't seen a photo of a Me 109 before with this emblem on it. Very interesting.

Thanks
Roger

Hi Roger,

Your Gustaw was found in Plzen (Czech Republic) and could be ultimately used by I/Erg.KG(J) - source "Luftwaffe over Czech Territory 1945 Vol.1".

Robert

Yellow 25 is also visible in "Jagdwaffe V5 S2, War in the east" p183, but said to be found at Pilsen...

Thanks Robert for the pointer! Yes, at page 224.
Also an interesting comment there that there are remains of a white Gruppe bar in front of the fuselage cross, indicating that JG 51 might also have been one of the previous users of this 109.

Sorry for the retrieval of a dead post, but I think I have a picture of the FW190 WKn.171680. Let me know if I am wrong and I will remove. Enjoy.

Hi Folks,

New here and I'm just a car modeler who dabbles in modeling aircraft so be gentle. I was researching the G-14 Yellow 25 from KG(J) 55 Greif with "the Google" and this thread popped up. I was confused as to why most of the info came up with bombers for 55. So I gather the bomber group became a fighter group at the end of the war? As I said Luftwaffe is not my second language so is KG a bomber group and JG a fighter group? So what does the KG(J) stand for. I first thought this one A/C was a squadron hack. Has anyone seen any other A/C from this group besides Y25? Very interesting bird to model. Thanks for any help!

Hi, Tim...

The KG(J) designation was seen towards the end of the war. I, too, am limited in detail here, but for example, I have a model of an Me262A-1a jet fighter, which carries the code B3+AA. The 'B3' code belongs to KG54, but when they were issued with their Me262s, they were ordered to undertake fighter duties instead of bomber duties, hence the addition of the (J) suffix. So, my understanding is that KG(J) units were formerly bomber units whose role changed to that of a fighter unit.

Somethng tells me that some of the intended KG(J) units never materialised and so were 'paper' entries only, but I'm sure someone with a little more knowledge on this subject might put us both right.

Oh, and welcome aboard too... hope you like the forum.

Kindest regards,

Paul
