Re: Beaufighters in the Night/Eisel
I can comment on it, but as I wrote it, I'm not sure how objective I would be.....
It's the story of, mainly, one of the four US Beau squadrons from formation in Florida, training in the US and England, including transition from the P-70 to the Beau with the many difficulties associated with that. Then on to their combat debut in North Africa, Corsica, and into southern France and Germany. Their biggest claim to fame was the night, bad weather, low-level downing of a Ju-290 making a run from Stuttgart to Barcelona carrying party officials and, probably, looted valuables for the post-war. It describes in detail the operational and maintenance headaches arising from operating a British aircraft in the US supply chain - of which their wasn't one. The squadron had to beg, borrow, and steal the parts and supplies needed to fly. Some good, unpublished photos and combat reports make it a pretty good (there's that bias again!) read. |

Re: Beaufighters in the Night/Eisel
I was doing a book signing yesterday at Dulles Airport.
A young Dane came by and had read my book. Interesting and gratifying to see younger people still taking an interest in history. |
Re: Beaufighters in the Night/Eisel
The young Dane is now at home and started reading your book while in the air :-)
Nice to see you here as well. Regards Mikkel Plannthin |
Re: Beaufighters in the Night/Eisel
From one Lt Col to another, I look forward to reviewing it and only hope that Pen & Sword have done you justice; all too often lately, they have not!

Re: Beaufighters in the Night/Eisel
Mikkel,
Hello! A pleasure meeting you. Although my oldest son is only 18 and thus younger than you, anything that occurred before 1990 is ancient history and thus boring. I see far to many like that. It was gratifying to see an interest in the event of the 20th century and which still sets the basis for much of today's world. I hope it was a pleasant journey home for you. Cheers, Brick --------------------------------------------------------------- Col Goss, I was very satisfied with Pen & Sword. They're also handling my next one, due out next spring on Desert Storm F-4G Wild Weasel ops. v/r, Brick |
Re: Beaufighters in the Night/Eisel
Brick: Glad you are satisfied. P&S are really churning them out, publishing more than one book on some subjects (Spitfire against V2 & RAF against V1). Just finished reading for review 'One of the Few' which was a good read slightly marred by poor photo quality, a number of typos, inaccurate index and padding in respect of superfluous appendices....
