Do18 shot down Walrus 24 April 1940

Hi guys

Can anyone throw any light on the Luftwaffe unit involved? Even better, any details of the actual aircraft/crew?

Cheers
Brian

Find the book 'Fledgling Eagles' by Chris Shores and company. Try Bookfinder.

Thanks Jim!

I've had a copy for years - infact, I provided much of the information!

Incidentally, the incident is not recorded!

Best wishes
Brian

Doesn't appear in the Gen.Qu. losses either.

Hi Jim

I've obviously confused you! The Do18 shot down the Walrus - I'm looking for the unit of the Do18 etc.

Cheers

Re: Do18 shot down Walrus 24 April 1940

Brian,

It seems that a Ju88C of the Zerstörerstaffel/KG30 shot down a Walrus of 700 Squadron (on board HMS Suffolk) off Stavanger, Norway.
At least, if that's the geographical area you're looking for.....

One other problem. According following link, this was on 17.4.40:
http://www.wlb-stuttgart.de/seekrieg...r-verluste.htm

Another Ju88 vs. Walrus encounter or has someone a wrong date?

Regards,

Leendert

What is your source for this alleged incident? Nothing is mentioned in the KTB's from the Seefliegerunits, other than a Do 18 reporting beeing attcked, by unknown aircraft and had to make an emergency-landing!!!

Brian,

I was too focused on "Walrus" that I forgot that your question was in relation to a Do-18!

Anyways, the lost Walrus of 24-4-1940 is mentioned on this website as well: http://www.naval-history.net/xDKWW2-4004-13APR04.htm

No mentioning is made here of being shot down, but it adds that it operated from the cruiser HMS Southampton.

Leendert

Re: Do18 shot down Walrus 24 April 1940

On 24. April 1940 the Luftwaffe had a total of five Staffeln equipped with Do 18's to its disposal. All of them were in Kü.Fl.Gr.406 subordinated to Führer der Seeluftstreitkräfte West (F.d.L. West). 2./406, 3./406 and 2./906 were located at Hörnum and 1./106 with 1./406 in Rantum. The last two Staffeln often used Hörnum as forward base for operations.
On 24.04.40 the KTB of F.d.L. West give the following details:
06.14 - 06.36 hours five Do 18's of 3./406 Hörnum took off for recce in the Skarerrak area.
06.55-08.02 ten Do 18's of 2./106 and 1./406 took off from Hörnum for recce in Seegebiet (sea area) "A".
At 10.43 aircraft K6+GH of 1./406 reported being attacked by an enemy aircraft in area 4128. 20 minutes later the same aircraft reported "Carrying out intended mission".
Apparently, all aircraft came safely back to base. No loss or claims of enemy aircraft indicated.

Re: Do18 shot down Walrus 24 April 1940

OK guys - let's recap

The Walrus was L2316 lost on 24 April as noted by Alex.

As far as I am aware it was flying from Hatston on this occasion and not from HMS Southampton.

It FTR from a recce off Fair Isle and was believed to have been shot down by a Do18 reported (by whom?) to have been in the area. Could this have been the Do18 reported by Junker as having carried out an emergency landing following combat on 24th? More details please, Junker.

I note that two Do18s from 2/406 carried out emergency landings next day (25th) but this only confuses the issue!

Over to the more knowledgeable!

Cheers
Brian

Re: Do18 shot down Walrus 24 April 1940

According the Naval History website HMS Jupiter was sent out at 0800 on 24 April 1940 to search for the Walrus. Loss time therefore prior to that or perhaps even night before?
Walrus was of HMS Southampton, but indeed operated from RNAS Hatston.

Re: Do18 shot down Walrus 24 April 1940

Seaplanes and I posted at almost the same time!

So, now what have we? With Leendert's latest, the times don't seem to coincide to suggest that the Walrus and Do18 K6+GH would have clashed! Is Area 4128 anywhere near Fair Isle?

Any ideas?

Cheers
Brian
