17/5/41 Bf110s and Ju52s on Greek airfields

Hi guys

On 17 May 1941, Beaufighters from Crete attacked three Greek aerodromes and seriously damaged several Bf110s and Ju52s. Does anyone know the actual damage inflicted?

Cheers
Brian

Dear Brian,
One of the three airfields which attacked by the Beaufighters during that day was the airfield of Molaoi. According to a german document ,which i have in my hands , that raid took place at 05:30 and the casualties was one man dead and several lightly wounded. No aircraft casualties recorded.
Hope this helps

Many thanks Tasos

The other two airfields were Hassani and Argos, so presumably the aircraft casualties occurred there.

Hi.

I have a lot of Bf 110 losses at Argos for this day, and also several Ju 52 at Kalamaki.

Re: 17/5/41 Bf110s and Ju52s on Greek airfields

Gentlemen:

On 15 Sept 1944, I destroyed 2 JU-52s trying to land at an airfield on an island almost due West (10-12 miles) of Athens, Greece. The runway which ran approximately East and West(?) had a good sized hill to the south of the runway. Several JU-52s were parked along the runway, which were strafed by Barrie Davis, one of our pilots. In Googling the Island of Salamis, I think the airfield was located there. If so, can anyone tell me the name of the field and perhaps give a longitude and latitude for it? Our intelligence wrote up the incident and called the field Megara?? Thank you.

From there I flew at wave top level (for a couple of minutes) toward Kalamaki observing numerous dust trails from landing aircraft. However, by the time I got there, only one was still not in a revetment. I strafed what I believe was a JU-88 just he pulled into a revetment. Unbelievably, as I passed over the revetment, a man on the ground, running toward a mounted machine gun, picked up a rock and threw it at me. He had quite a good aim as the rock appeared to pass over my left wing. I intended going back for him but flak changed my mind.

Andreas & Marcel

Excellent! Thanks very for much for the information - the Bf110 losses/damage was quite considerable. Any idea how many Ju52s were hit at Kalamaki/Hassani?

Art - your contribution most interesting - a bit beyond my scope at present but noted for future projects. Many thanks.

Cheers

Re: 17/5/41 Bf110s and Ju52s on Greek airfields

Field "Megara" is not on an island, it`s on the mainland.

Fp.Nr. 31 148 (09.43-04.44) Fl.H.Kdtr. (E) 16/IV/ Megara

Kdr., 18.12.42-22.12.43 Hptm. Friedrich Wolf, ab 22.12.43 Hptm. Heinrich Otte

In Attika there were also the aerodroms:

Eleusis, Tatoi, Kalamaki, Phaliron and Skaramanga. Not very far Tanagra.

Andreas

You are aware that you give the loss for Bf 110 WNr 3461 as II./ZG 26 while everyone else says II./ZG 76? If majority rules (:) ) you are found to have had finger trouble that day....

Re: 17/5/41 Bf110s and Ju52s on Greek airfields

Hello Byron,

Thank you for your information but I am not sure what the abbreviations stand for. Could you explain? Are the other airfields you mentioned near Athens and on the mainland? Do you know if there was an airfield on Salamis? The pilots involved tried to determine where these 52's were attempting to land and our best guess was that it was on Salamis. I believe it was a Ju-52 unit as all the aircraft lined up beside the runway were Ju-52s

I appreciate your help.

Hi.

One of my team members must have had a bad day, but thanks for the hint, and the loss record is updated after being checked against the original document.

Sadly we have a backlog with regards to double checking all entries of about 7430 records, but we still have a far better record than the GenQu with regards to errors made in the reports :)

Andreas B

Re: 17/5/41 Bf110s and Ju52s on Greek airfields

Art.

Fp.Nr. is short for Feldpostnummer, equivalent to a MPO number as I am sure you know.

Fl.H.Kdtr is short for Fliegerhorstkommandantur, the command of a military airfield. The (E) says something about the status of the field with regards to how well equipped it is for instrument landing, what kind of surface etc etc, while the other numbers and codes are for ordering and organisational issues.

Hope this clear things up a little bit

Andreas B

Re: 17/5/41 Bf110s and Ju52s on Greek airfields

Byron and Andreas,

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions. I really appreciate it. I guess that since I do not know the actual locations of these fields/towns, I will ask my granddaughter in Athens if she can pinpoint the towns for me.

Of course I am puzzled as I mentioned in my story, we flew at sea level to Kalamaki and strafed losing one pilot. At our reunions we attempted to locate the field that the Germans were using. By virtue of the headings and distance, we concluded the field was on Salamis. So now we are back to the beginning...with no field on Salamis we are confused as to how we flew in an east to south-east heading for a couple minutes and arrived at Kalamaki?? Do either of you gentlemen know of a reference that would pinpoint fields west of Athens? Again I thank you for your excellent assistance.

Byron, your English is great and completely understandable. I wish I had paid more attention when I was taking German in school!

Cordially, Art Fiedler

Re: 17/5/41 Bf110s and Ju52s on Greek airfields

Hello Art,

You can see on the attached map of Attica the airfields I mentioned.
Begining from the left and just behind the island of Salamis (all marked with a red arrow) is "Megara" with his Aerodrom. Then and going to the right you see "Eleusis" (or Elefsis, or Elefsina). Then you see "Skaramangas" (landingplace for seaplanes), the same after Skaramangas "P.Phaliron".

Going north you will find "Tatoi" (or Dekelia) and norther "Tanagra".

hope it helps
