Nachtjagd War Diaries
 

Today I went to Telford and purchased both volumes of Theo Boiten's new book 'Nachtjagd War Diaries'

First impressions are very good. Both volumes are extensive and heavy! Content and quality of photographs are very good. From the small sections I have read they are detailed, and time will confirm that its contents are thorough and accurate.

I look forward to hearing other opinions as the book's circulation increases. Well done Theo!

I did the same David, equally impressed with the "weight" of the books in many senses and their quality both in content and production. Other responses, photos etc here:

firstly, it was a pleasure to meet you at Telford, and I hope you enjoy the books.

'just a little note with a correction in volume 2, page 337: the sentence that starts, "Oblt. Kretschmer..." and also the subsequent I./NJG4 experiences report should actually appear on page 334 before the last paragraph. This was something that I fortgot to correct during proofing (a damning oversight on my part).

Neither are available for pre-order as far as I can see Ray. Both volumes were originally available but were withdrawn some time after with all pre-orders being cancelled. Since then both volumes are on a "Sign up to be notified when this item becomes available" status...

Took a trip up to the Aviation Bookshop to pick up the two volumes. Although quite familiar with some of the content (I translated about 65 pages worth of vets accounts including Peter Spoden's moving & eloquent Foreword - that's not all of them by any means!) I was still hugely impressed with the sheer size of the two tomes (total of 750+ pages!) & the evident deep research therein. If pushed I'd say the four or five different font sizes make some of the pages look a little untidy at first glance, but only in places (claims info, text, pic captions, personal account side bars) while I guess Vol II is a tad short on pics (a few too many generic images from ww2images.com) but very text heavy. These are really pretty minor league criticisms though. The list of sources, contributors, bibliography and explanation of methodology are eye-opening. Considering there is little or no info out there for 1945 Vol II especially is a superb achievement. Looking forward to hours of browsing ahead ! IMHO book(s) of the year !

According to this webshop the books are not yet published.
The covers shown are the old designs and both books are listed at £ 29,95.

I have an outstanding order and I wonder if they will become available.

I checked with the Aviation Megastore here in Holland and they are offering both volumes at € 42.95 (~£36.50) each!
I don't know what the charges for international shipping are, but it I think they might be lower than the Red Kite offer of £25/£40 for international shipping for both books (which they are offering for £ 80.00).

All in all I think overseas customers might get a better deal from the Aviation Megastore. I have already placed my order and hope to collect the books this Saturday!

cover rrp in the UK is indeed £40 per volume, signed copies available (authors+ 2 Nachtjagd veterans) via the Aviation Bookshop (Tunbridge Wells, Kent) who have a 20% discount/signing day on 6 Dec for personal visitors.

Received my copies for Christmas. I am hugely impressed with the depth of information in both volumes. These volumes have filled a massive hole in published information on the night war in Western Europe.

An aviation bookseller in the western US I know states that these books have a US distributor. He's checking into this. If he's right and can get the books, I can let you know if you remind me in about a week. I actually found Vol 2 from a bookseller on US Amazon.com, and have it on order. Unfortunately no Vol 1 :(.

As part of a special deal posted on the LEMB, if you visit the Aviation Bookshop's website here, they still have hard-back copies of both volumes, signed by Luftwaffe Night Fighter pilots Peter Spoden, Rolf Edhardt & al three authors, available at £40 a volume... just mention Luftwaffe Experten when ordering :)

You just need to drop the bookshop owner Simon an email via the link on their site and ask him about the books, just make sure you mention Luftwaffe Experten to get the special price. Simon emailed me the with details of the offer earlier in the week, so it is a recent development... and members of the LEMB can see more here...

Incidentally, for those interested, I'm not getting anything out of this arrangement... it just makes sense for author/publishers/outlets to make use of the various niche forums available...
