Libya / A/C Losses in April - May 1942
Colleagues;
I am looking for information / confirmation about two shot down resp. damaged Beaufighters. Damage by MG fire from the oasis of GIALO (Jalo). Would not insist on Beaufighters. Could also be Blenheim etc. Have checked the book "Bomber Losses in Middle East and Med" - nothing mentioned there for this period. Planes were not bombing but only strafing - fighters? Or bombers which had their load already dropped. Would be glad to get some light into this story... |
Re: Libya / A/C Losses in April - May 1942
Hi Kuno
I note that a 272 Squadron Beaufighter crewed by F/O Gee and Sgt Gill failed to return from an attack on Gialo on 5 April 1942. I will endeavour to find more information. Cheers Brian |
Re: Libya / A/C Losses in April - May 1942
Failed to return from an attack on Gialo aerodrome. Made three attacks, destroying an unidentified aircraft on the ground. Last seen after the third run by a Maryland who then lost sight of the Beaufighter but then immedatiely saw an aircraft burning on the ground.
No serial for aircraft but coded K and took off from LG.05 at 12:05 hrs. Regards Ross |
Re: Libya / A/C Losses in April - May 1942
Oh; that was quick. The capter in the text I was rfering to mentions Easter Sunday 1942 - which was actually the 5th. April!
The plane they attacked was a German Ju.52 on the ground. He mentions two A/C. One crashed down the other was able to land in the desert. Crew went POW. Could you tell me, where you have your information from? |
Re: Libya / A/C Losses in April - May 1942
Fg Off George M Gee & Sgt John B Gill were both taken POW; ac was apparently T4839

Re: Libya / A/C Losses in April - May 1942
Cheers Chris,
I had T4839 lost on the same day from No.252 Sqn but no crew or further details. Looks like No.272 borrowed it for the mission. This make the full code BT-K. Kuno Information from squadron ORBs. Regards Ross |
Re: Libya / A/C Losses in April - May 1942
Just an hour ago I found another account to the same incident: "Gebirgsjäger in Libyens Wüste", Werner Kost, SV.288: It happened on 5th April 1942. A Ju.52 brought in supplies when they saw enemy recce planes around noon time. The planes attacket the Ju.52 on the ground. The Gebirgsjäger platoon went into position around the area and shot back with MG and other infantry weapon they had. Ju.52 went ablaze but they could see that teach of he withdrawing enemy planes had a smoketail. German losses were a crew member of the Ju.52, the second in command of the Gebirgsjäger, Fw. Dussler and another one seriously injured.

I guess I have asked a very stupid question - but honestly; I don't know what an 'ORB' is. Could anybody tell me please?

272 Squadron RAF
I am looking for somebody who could provide me with a photograph of a Bristol Beaufighter belonging to 272 Squadron RAF. It should show an airplane in te colour and markings as it was used by that particular squadron in April 194 when it was based inNorth Africa. The photo is thought to be used in a publication. |
