Re: Messerschmitt Bf110D

-- On 16 July 1940 GLM Ernst Udet became the user of Bf 110 D-0 (3354) VF+HP, this a/c replaced his ageing Bf 110 C-1 (945) GK+AY and was stationed at Tempelhof. The a/c had been used at Tarnewitz for armament trials. -- |

You can find more details in Roy Conyers Nesbit and Georges Van Acker's excellent book "The Flight Of Rudolf Hess: Myths and Reality." Part of the fuselage of this aircraft is on display at the Imperial War Museum in London. Or was the last time I was there. |
Re: Messerschmitt Bf110D
Thanks :) I know for the register of the Hess plane but I did not spot in first moment that it is other version... Thanks for correction :)

A pleasure to help. There are pictures of the Hess Bf110 in the book I mentioned, unfortunately after the crash though. There is also a picture of a Bf110 at the Mtt Works at Augsburg with 900 litre drop tanks and the code VJ+?? which may or may not be the Hess plane as the authors point out. Sadly the rest of the code is obscured. I like your websites by the way. :D |
Re: Messerschmitt Bf110D
No problem Pawel- I greatly appreciate your kind effort :)
Maximowitz- this is at least good trace, so Hess maybe did have D model of Bf110 but he crashed in E model in UK. I think I have seen long time ago image of crashed sample. Thanks for comment about web site, I run it slowly with my friends :) |
Re: Messerschmitt Bf110D
Some text from: Messerschmitt Bf 110 at War - Armand Van Ishoven.
"On 16 July 1940 Generalluftzeugmeister Ernst Udet became the user of Bf 110D-0, VF+HP, W.Nr 3354; this aircraft replaced his ageing Bf 110C-1, GK+AY, W.Nr 945 and was stationed at Tempelhof airfield. The aircraft had been used at Tarnewitz for arament trials." "Udetīs faithful campanion on all his flights was his mechanic, Gefreiter Kurt Schnittke. Udet saw to it that a rear-view mirror was installed INSIDE the cockpit. Very few knew its funcktion. During a flight Udet now and then liked to take a sip og Cognac from the small flask he carried and he thought it only right that his flying mechanic did the same. However, when the mechanic took a sip it made a noise in the microphone which could be worrying - but when he saw Schnittke in the mirror taking a sip, Udet could be happy that nothing was amiss."
