Greece April 1941

Hi guys

Did any of the aircrew who flew operationally in Greece in 1941 write accounts of their experiences? Perhaps in Der Adler or German newspapers?

I would appreciate any anecdotes from this period.

Cheers
Brian

Brian: The campaign was covered by Kriegsberichter and their articles and stories would have widely appeared in German newspapers and magazines between 6 April and June 1941. A skilled search using Google should reveal a few repositories that have microfilms and microfiche of some of these. The Center for Research Libraries in Chicago is one that I know of. Most authors, such as Chris Shores and Brian Cull (Air War for Yugoslavia, Greece and Crete), skip this resource because it's too difficult to get at.

Hi Brian,

this is an interesting event which i read in the new book of a pilots son (Hans Peter Eisenbach) about his fathers servicetime in Greece (FF. Fritz Eisenbach) with "Ergänzungsgruppe St.G. 3" and later I./ St.G.3.

I would reccomend the booklet.

Hi Snautzer

Many thanks - after much trouble I have been able to download the copy of Der Adler, certain parts of which look most interesting but way outside my mastery of German!

Are you able to provide a translation of pages 2 and 4 for me, please?

I will of course acknowledge your assistance in my forthcoming book.

Larry - I am Brian Cull, co-author of Air War over Yugoslavia, Greece and Crete - I was not aware of the collection you mention, but then it was some 20-odd years ago!

Thanks everyone.
Brian

Hi Brian -

Yikes! and double Yikes! My face is red. Your collaborative products with Chris Shores are iconic cornerstones in the field of aviation history and I have them all and frequently refer to them. :):)

I have just one thought to add to what has already been said here. I do recall seeing a file or several files full of copies of Kriegsberichter articles and stories in the U.S. NARA guides to the microfilmed German records. It was many years ago, but I believe those files were in the OKW - Propaganda-Abteilung collection in Microcopy T-77. It would be a laborous fishing expedition to search there for what you want because the collection may be incomplete. Hopefully, the Der Adler articles will meet your needs and you won't find it necessary to search beyond those!

Cheers,

Larry

Think i can do that without making to many obvious mistakes.

Mind you (as you are, offcourse, well aware of)... der Adler is pure propaganda.

Ill start (and prob finish) tomorrow.

Hi Snautzer

That is most kind of you - I really do appreciate your time and effort.

Perhaps you'll advise me (by PM?) of your true identity to enable me to acknowledge your assistance in the forthcoming book.

Cheers
Brian

Brian,

Is your forthcoming book about the Balkans Campaign of April & May 1941 ? An update/revision of your earlier co-authored work on the same subject ? It would be most welcome. Can you please enlighten (tease ?) us ?

Yours in great anticipation !

Martin.

Re: Greece April 1941

Hi Martin

Thanks for the interest.

Actually, my new book is a biography of Bill Vale DFC, who flew with 80 Squadron during the Greece campaign, and was second only to Pat Pattle
regarding number of claims. You probably know this, anyway.

Owing to the lack of 'a personal account' (Bill was killed in a car crash in 1981) I have relied on placing Bill in an account of 80 Squadron's activities, using original and 'new' information.

Bill was quite a character and deserves a biography. Perhaps you'll acquire a copy in due course! Due out circa October.

Cheers
Brian

Hi guys ,
look into the book: "Fronteinsätze eines Stuka Fliegers" !
The Stuka pilot (FF:Fritz Eisenbach) crashed deadly on 30.03.1944 in Russia when he was 23 years old and unmarried.
The author of the book (Hans Peter Eisenbach) is born in 1952 ! So he can definitely not be the son of Fritz !
