He-177 losses , 12/13 June 1944

Hello gentlemen ,

Could a nice fellow list all He-177s lost that night ? I suspect one crashed without casualties close to my home in Normandy near Bolbec . A police report states that a three (!) engined bomber went down with its bomb load at 2 am. Maybe a KG40 airplane ?
I've been told that Guenther Ott has done some research on He177 , maybe he could help identify this plane and crew ?
Thank you.

Losses I have for 13-6-44 are crew of Uffz. Bruhan (umlaut over u ) of I/KG40 missing over the Channel. A He177 of II/KG40 shot down over France crew baled out safe, and another of II/KG40 attacked by a nightfighter over the Seine Estuary with two crew reported wounded,

Checked RAF combat report and the claim that may relate to Ofw. Neuenfeldt's aircraft was made by P/O Kearney (RCAF). He claimed a He177 shot dowm 15 miles N.E. of Le Harve at 0130hrs on 13th June, reporting see one crewman baling out. The port engine of the Mosquito failed after the combat and Kearney had to make an emergency landing at a Advanced Landing ground unfortunately the Mosquito hit a truck killing a person in it.

Fantastic Brian !

It fits perfectly well with the area where crashed the bomber !
Now I'm looking for the crew and Werk-Nummer , but it seems it is another challenge .

Many thanks !

Hi Zorglub

The entire crew of Obfw Werner Neuenfeld's aircraft (550221?) baled out, two - Uffz Karl Henninger and Fw Alfred Schlegel - sustaining injuries. This, according to my book 'Diver! Diver! Diver!'

Cheers

Hello BRIAN,
Please, would you have more details about the He177A-5 from 6./KG40, werknummer 550083 supposedly claimed by S/L Bob Cowper from 456 Squadron on the night of 8 June 1944? Would you have the codes of the aircraft as well as the crew names, please? I do have a particular interest on Cowper´s claims and activities.
Many thanks

Re: He-177 losses , 12/13 June 1944

Hello Brian and Brian ,

It seems there a confusion about 550221 , was it actually flown by Ofw. Neuenfeld ?

Re: He-177 losses , 12/13 June 1944

From what I thoght Neuenfeldt and crew were 4/KG40 while Henninger and Schlegel were 6/KG40. Neither of these two apppear in the NVM for Neuenfeldts shooting down on 9-7-44 which I thought was also the same crew who baled out uninjured ( Sea eagles vol 2 ) on 13-6-44.

Re: He-177 losses , 12/13 June 1944

The 2 who bailed-out on 13.juni were quote as severely wound , so could hv some doubt that they were on the crashed plane of july...

Hi Brian and Zorglub

I'm open to correction. I have no prime source.

Re: He-177 losses , 12/13 June 1944

Remi,

The NVM I have has no code but has 083 added in writing which seems to link to w.n. 550083 from the Griehl/Dressel he 177 book.

Brian,

I think we are all open to suggestion on some of these losses with a morning and evening raid on some individual dates plus some of the NVM's have codes and werk nummers while some do not and some crews operating in other staffel. I also thought there was no NVM for Ofw Neuenfeldt on the 13th because his crew baled put without injury.
Like you I will modify any of my notes if further evidece comes up,

All the Best

Re: He-177 losses , 12/13 June 1944

Gentlemen

If you wait a few months, I should be able to answer this query. Problem is that the NVMs for this time were confused and had very little in the way of aircraft details. I only found out the loss when contacting this crew who were shot down later

Hello Chris ,

Have you been in touch with Ofw Werner Neuenfeld , is he still alive ?
I think I have pinpointed his He177 crash-site of 13 June 1944 south Fecamp . Probably later this year I'll find some airplane pieces there .
