Do 17 of 3./KG 76 down in France June 1940
Hi everyone,
attached is a picture of a Do 17 of 3./KG 76 which crash-landed in France June 1940. It looks like the aircraft code is F1+CL or GL. Does anyone knows the correct code? Does anyone knows near which village the aircraft came down? I've also attached a enlargement of the picture showing the church in the background. Kind regards & thanks in advance, Rudi. |

Robert,
thanks very much for your help. You're absolutely right. The church in the background of the picture is located at Flesquières, which is SW of Cambrai. Thanks again for your help. Kind regards, Rudi |

Rudi...
I have a slightly clearer copy of this pic which seems to indicate the code as being F1+CL. Regards... Paul |
Re: Do 17 of 3./KG 76 down in France June 1940
Paul,
Before we confirm this loss as F1+CL in the Revised EOE Data Base, would it be possible to see a copy (scan) of your image, which you indicate is a little clearer for showing the a/c code? Does anyone have a clear photo showing the other side of the fuselage? Also, I'd be interested in any other photos of this wreck, particularly showing the smashed front fuselage to see if it might have carried any Staffel insignia. Thanks for your help, |

Re: Do 17 of 3./KG 76 down in France June 1940
Hi, Larry...
I've attached the pic as requested. I have to admit, I've run it through Photoshop to see if I can get any more clarity, and now sometimes I see a 'C', other times a 'G'... ! I can't be positive now, but certainly, there seems to be more of the character visible, especially on the lower edge. I did genuinely see it more as a 'C' previously. Sorry it's not the conclusive proof needed. Regards... Paul |
Re: Do 17 of 3./KG 76 down in France June 1940
Thanks everyone for your input. It's very much appreciated.
> Paul, I think it's F1+GL. I've "fooled around a bit" with your picture, which is indeed much better then the one I've posted before, and I came up with the attached result. It looks like a G to me, not a C. Once again thanks everyone four your inputs. Kind regards, Rudi. |
Re: Do 17 of 3./KG 76 down in France June 1940
Paul,
There is one more line of evidence that suggests that this is F1+GL. I have quite clear photos of F1+CL as a FL, completely intact Do17z. One of the strong candidates for that one was another 3 Staffel loss the next day, 4 June. There are other possibilities for that one, but after looking closely at Paul's photo, I'm quite convinced that Rudi's photo, for which we have an identical copy from another EOE Working Group member, shows the code as being F1+GL. If anyone is aware of any other views of this one, I'd appreciate knowing about it. For all of the many board readers who have are awaiting word, my serious cancer surgery yesterday went spectacularly well. The top facial reconstrutive team in this part of the US worked on the golf-ball sized tumor for six hours under a microscope to separate this cancer from my main taciall nerve which they thought that they would have to sacrifice. They were successful against their pre-surgery predictions, and after only one night in the Intesive Care hospital unit, I'm home now (with a drain tube still affixed to my face) and back at work, although I'm still facing extensive chemo and radiation therapy. I've got a 90% probbilty of a full cure from this cancer, which is about as good as it gets at 65 years old. Its hard to slow down from something I love to do so much, but my wife has threatened to kill me if I don't slow down long enough for this five-inch long cut along my jaw to heal. So, I guess that there is more than one way to die from cancer. To any of you with whom I'm tardy with my correspondence, please bear with me. This had to take priority. Thanks for all who have offered the many kind expressions of support and good wishes that I have received. It is appreciated. Regards, Larry |
