No. 142 Sqn Battle shot down May 14th 1940
2 Attachment(s)
I am looking for a photograph of a No. 142 Squadron Fairey Battle shot down on May 14th 1940 at Ecly near Rethel in Ardennes (France) : This aircraft belly landed...
Perhaps one of those photographs is the one I am looking for... So, does anyone have one photograph in which we could see the serial number of those Battle or other Battle of No. 142 Squadron lost during May - June 1940 ? Thanks |
Re: No. 142 Sqn Battle shot down May 14th 1940
142 sqdn lost four Battles this day to "friendly fire" - all attacked by Moranes of GC III/7. Battles lost were P2246, P2333, K9333 and L5517.
It was K9333 flown by P/O H L Oakley that belly landed at Ecly. Aircraft carried code letters QT - K. Details from Battle of France, then and now by Peter Cornwell. Hope this helps, Ian Simpson |

Thank you Ian for this point,
Does a photograph of Fairey Battle K 9333 QToK exist ? If anyone does have this photograph, I need it... Bye... |

Arnaud
Re the photos of the two 142 Squ planes you posted - The QT-C (or possibly QT-G) is the Roth loss on 10 May -L5231. The other is QT-D which I believe to be a post Battle of France loss. I've not pinned down the ID with certainty. The photo used on the rear dustjacket of Cornwell's t&n looks a good candidate to be this plane. Hope that helps Best regards Iain |

One more candidat to exclure for the one at Ecly... We are progressing good... Arnaud |
Re: No. 142 Sqn Battle shot down May 14th 1940
Chorley has updated QT-D as L5502 crashed 1km SW Audembert 28 July 40

Re: No. 142 Sqn Battle shot down May 14th 1940
Fairey Battle QT-K of No. 142 Squadron is in some sources, as in Peter Cornwell's work, K 9333 !!!
Does anyone have any evidence about that information ? K 9333 belly landed on May the 14th 1940, but I thought that this aircraft was QT-L... |

Does anyone have one photo showing the serial number of that Battle QToL belly landed at Saint-Loup-Terrier following my archive ?

Well Arnaud,
"One more candidat to exclure for the one at Ecly... We are progressing good..." Are you.....? Think twice. Bernard. |
Re: No. 142 Sqn Battle shot down May 14th 1940
After having investigated at Ecly, the old population at Ecly and in the villages around didn't have any souvenir of a Fairey Batttle belly landed at Ecly as wrote the Operations Record Book. But population remember very well the Fairey Battle, not far, at Barby near Rethel from another Squadron.
So I guessed no Fairey Battle belly landed near Ecly. I am quite sure, now, that the Battle QToL at Saint-Loup-Terrier was the one located at Ecly. The crew, I guessed, walked from Saint-Loup-Terrier to their base. The crew was, then, picked up there after a phone call or something... The question remains the same. Does anyone know the serial number of that Battle QToL to confirm my hypothese ? |
Re: No. 142 Sqn Battle shot down May 14th 1940
Based on the descriptions - e.g. by Petter Cornwell and Gillet - only one of the four Battles of 142 Sqn that were shot down on May 14 made a controlled belly landing. According all sources this was the K9333 QT-K.
I assume this is correct. Then this would imply QT-L was not a May 14 loss. Although sometimes - and presumably wrongly - listed under May 14, I have for QT-L the serial P2195. Mentioned e.g. in Rupture sur la Meuse of Sacré/Gillet. Interestingly P2195 is not listed in Peter's magnum opus. I have no photographic evidence to support this match, but also no arguments to dismiss it. Does this help? Pieter |
Re: No. 142 Sqn Battle shot down May 14th 1940
What is the evidence saying that letter-code of Fairey Battle K9333 is K (QT-K) ?
Any assistance is welcome... |
