Bf 109G lost in head on collision with P-47D on 22nd June 1944

On 22nd June 1944 Lt Boleshaw Kocienski of 510th FS , 405th FG was KIA when his P-47D 'K-Kid' collided head on with a Bf 109G.

Can anyone confirm the Luftwaffe aircraft / pilot/ unit concerned?

BTW - the 510th FS took off at 1947 hrs from Christchurch and their mission was to bomb bridges near Cloyes, SW of Paris so the collision may have occurred in that area. Also I have assumed it was a '109 as this is what was reported by USAAF witnesses to the incident.

Is the name spelled correctly? Can't find anything in the MACR's.

Mike

In this area JG 3 and JG 5 lost several Bf 109 in battle with P-47 - but there is no midair collision noted.

Same spelling I have

He is buried at the Brittany American Cemetery.

The MACR doesn't say anything concerning a collision.

Cheers,

John

Hi,
John Foreman in "Over the Beaches" claimed Kocienski as missing to head-on collision with Bf 109 at Cloyes.

Hi.

I do not believe Demmig is the right one.

According to the NVM he was seen diving in a steep angle after a second run through a formation of 4-engined bombers, without any radio communication... his aircraft was not seen again.

Thanks for all your replies.

So the jury is still out whether it was Uffz Walter Demmig of 4/JG5. The time of the collision is given as 22.30 hrs in the MACR so I wonder what time Uffz Walter Demmig was KIA?

Lastly Mike (Revi16) if the MACR's are now online can you provide the link

Once again thanks

Larry

The MACR does not mention the word "collision". It looks like they shot each other down.

No link, you will need to join Footnote to have access to the MACR's.

IMO, $70 bucks a year is a pretty good deal provided Footnote® keeps adding aggressively to their offerings. But for those who need to refer to the MACRs on a daily or near-daily basis, I guess it's a value over the short and intermediate term out to 3 years or so. For long-term users, however, maybe it would be more cost effective to buy the MACR microfiche.

Correction for Collision read shot down.

As for Uffz Walter Demmig of 4/JG5 can anyone say at what time he was KIA SW of Paris?

Could he have attacked some four engined 8th Air Force bombers before coming across the 510th FS afterwards - presuming the 8th AF was in the area?

Re: Bf 109G lost in head on collision with P-47D on 22nd June 1944

I suppose another question could be - were there any 8th Air Force heavies attacking targets near Paris or returning that way?

I seem to think the 8th was doing a shuttle raid that day with a landing in Russia.
