An Operational Training Unit will train pilots on the operational aircraft and provides mission training.

The aircraft of the unit are:

Gelbe 3,

It would help if you tell us the name of the pilot.....In April 1945 several EJG 1 Staffel flew operations and not only the instructor pilots.

John.

Hi.

The pilot's name is Günther (or Günter) Seraphim.

He was probably not in EJG 1 per se, probably just still using the 4./Erg.J.G. West Erkännungsmarke when he was killed.

Anyone got information on how he was killed? I have speculated that he was still a member of the Stab IV./JG 5 when he was killed on April 10th 1945, but he was killed in Germany, not in Norway. Maybe transferred shortly before or on leave??

I know that other parts of the unit transferred pilots to the Reichsverteidigung

Andreas B

I got some information that "his aircraft was shot down and crashed at Feldmark Schweringen near Hanover on 10 April 1945.His body was found lying next to his aircraft"

Is there anybody that confirm that he was shot down? If so, maybe in what aircraft? Some might even find out who and how he was shot down?

Re: Ergänzungs Jagdgruppe West

Merely a suggestion, but if Schweringen, Niedersachsen is meant, then there was a claim by F/L W.E. Schrader of 486 Squadron (Tempest V, SN129) of a Fw-190 destroyed at/near not too far away Nienburg on 10 April 1945.

My uncle was a staffelkapitaen in Erg. Jagdgruppe West in 1940-41, later he was CO of Erg. Jagdgruppe 51 and in April 1945 he was with Erg. JG 1. They flew training sorties but often encountered enemy aircraft.

Re: Ergänzungs Jagdgruppe West

Ergänzungs-Jagdgruppe West wasn't formed until the end of January/beginning of February 1942 (at Cazaux/SW France), according to Prien in his JG 1/11 history on page 1665. It is first listed in the Gen.Qu.(6.Abt.) Verlustmeldungen on 12.02.42 when a Bf 109 E-7 belly landed at Cazaux due to engine trouble and was rated 60% damaged.

Your uncle must have been in one of the Ergänzungs-Verbände of JG 2 or JG 26 that preceeded Erg.JGr. West.

Hi Larry,

You are correct, I just checked my file, and he was posted to take over Ergaenzungsstaffel Jagdgeschwader 3 late in 1940.

Hi VtwinVince, where was your uncle based in 45? Which Staffel he flew?
Thanks
Rolf

Do you know, in when exactly he was member of JGr. West?
I have some group pictures of JGr. West, showing at least one other pilot of JG5 transfered to this unit. Pictures taken about september 1943.

Re: Ergänzungs Jagdgruppe West

Hi Rolf,

According to the Flugbuch, he was assigned to 13. EJG 1 on 25.2.1945, which was then renamed 17. EJG 1 in April. He flew from Erding and Muenchen-Riem mostly, on ME 109 G6, G12 and G14. The entries go up to April 13, 1945.
