Sad news. One of the 'greats', and a gentleman by all accounts.

Unfortunatley never had the chance to meet Rall but from all accounts seemed to be quite the gentlemen.

Like every WW2 veteran who passes on a daily basis a sad event.

He is wheels up for the last time.

When I heard the sad news, I felt immediately empty, sad and lonely. The world of aviation has become a lot poorer now.

Very sad news, I saw him only once when I went to listen his lecture but have seen him a couple times in TV. And of course I have read his memoirs. My impression on him was that he was a modest but lively old gentleman. In TV programs he also showed that he was witty and humorous and very clever; no wonder he reached high rank in military. And of course he was one of the greatest fighter pilots of his time.

I was fortunate enough to have met him on a number of occassions here in England, and 3 or 4 times at his home in Bavaria. A gentleman and a great racantour who will be sorely missed by all those interested in aviation.

Mr Copeland, Sir, I think you made a great impression on him, as well as his bottle of Schnapps! Fond memories!

All the best, David.

Re: General Gunther Rall has passed away at the age of 91 years old.

It is with great sadness that I have just Heard the news of the Passing away of the Legendary " General Gunther Rall ". I have had the Emmence privelage of meeting the " General " on many Ocassions here in England and at Gunther's home in Bavaria. I spoke to him on the telephone only a couple of weeks ago. Gunther Rall was not just a Legendary Wartime Fighter Ace, but a Man made from a mould no longer with us, he was a Truefull, Decent, Loyal Gentleman that I am very Proud to have called a Friend. It now seems that his Visit to England to Support me and my Aviation Gallery in April of this year was his last chance to meet his addoring Public. I am fortunate to have many many memmories of my time with " The General ", and tonight I shall raise a glass of his favorite whisky to him in his " Honour ". My thoughts are with his lovely family and his friends, I know how you are all feeling, especially you Stefan and Horst. May he be reunited with the Love of his life, Hertha his Wife. To Quote what he said to me only a couple of weeks a go " I am now on my final approach ".
May he Rest in Pease, God Bless.

Re: General Gunther Rall has passed away at the age of 91 years old.

I had the honour to have a steady contact with Mr Rall since 2002. I was hosting his first visit to Finland in 2003 and co-hosting his second visit in 2006.
In last May I visited his beautiful home at Bad Reichenhall with my wife. He gave us a 2 hour drive in the Alps in his VW Polo. I´ll never forget that trip.

We were supposed to meet again four weeks ago in September, when I visited Munich. He had to cancel a few days before. When he called me to announce and apologize that he couldn´t make it, he told me that we will meet the next time when I travel to South Germany. Unfortunately, that next time never came.

He was a great officer, pilot and person.
When he was asked during one of his lectures here in Finland about the best moment in his life, the answer was quick as a lightning: "When I married my wife!".

I am sure that they will meet again.

Rest in peace.

Quite an extraordinary man...there's no doubt about it.
I never had the priviledge to meeting him but like a lot of guys here, I was immediately impressed by his presence when I did see him on tv and film....

But you can't knock 91 years...an incredible life lived to the full.....try not to mourn him...remember him and his generation..as we all should.

I think he's the best example of why wars are so utterly pointless.
He could just as easily have been on the other side...in the end, it doesn't really matter, does it....we're all human beings...

I was talking the other day to a gentleman that once knew the great New Zealand Air ace Johnnie checketts..and I said to him then, how sad it is that we often see the greatest in people and in the same instant the very worst.....

God speed, Herr Rall.

So, would he? And I can confirm that Günther never was so tasteless to express such nasty words in a condolence thread.

Oh yes, he would. He used even more explicit words after having received another one of your slimy phone calls. And please: don't call him by his first name now that he is dead. I know that for you it always had to be 'Mr. Rall' or 'Herr General'. He loved to make these differences.

Only my deep respect towards Günther, whom I knew since 1965, hinders me to answer your effronteries. Stop it Mister Braatz!

My apologies if this has been posted somewhere else here, but there is a nice interview with Herr Rall at Oshkosh in July this year here - just click on the Gunther Rall link on the left of the screen and at the bottom of the next page, you'll find the extended clip... with thanks to Neil Page over on the LEMB for the pointer...

In fact, this is Günther Rall's last public appearance at Oshkosh, July 30, in front of a P-39: The 'Warbirds in Review' forum. He talks about his life and flying career. You can view it in full 41 minute length on www.neunundzwanzigsechs.de or www.twentyninesix.com. Many thanks to WIR chairwoman Connie Bowlin and producer Jon Tennyson, who own the copyright and gave their permission to post the video on these sites.

Thank you for sharing the very nice painting, Horst and thank you for sharing the interview, Peter and Kurt.

We were unable to make it to Oshkosh because Walter was still too little yet to make such a big trip.

Even the Wall Street Journal has an obituary on General Rall. Feel free to E Mail the reporter with any corrections you may have! I especially didn't like the reference to "Mr. Rall".

General Gunther Rall has passed away at the age of 91 years old.

I met Gunther Rall at a book signing event at the 'Aces High Gallery' in Wendover, England a short time ago.

I have to say he was an extremely polite man, who answered all questions patiently and enthusiastically and was delighted that I had taken my 7 year old Son along too!

He was able to sign both a copy of his first biography by Jill Amadio and also a copy of Volume 1 of Obermeier's 'Ritterkreuztrager der Jagdfleiger' book. He seemed genuinly interested in the questions which were put to him and was without doubt a very interesting man to meet.

Regards Richard.

Re: General Gunther Rall has passed away at the age of 91 years old.

I just obtained recent issue of Fliegerblatt with Kurt Braatz artical about Mr. Rall ... and tommorow I will drive nearby of Mr. Rall´s house, so I decided to drop few lines in this thread.

I met Mr. Rall about 4 times, once in Prague, two times in an event organized by Gemeinschaft d. F. and once I visited him at home (and in very painfull way I realized that my forehead is higher than his restroom´s door frame :) )

I was always amazed how Mr. Rall was friendly, open, communicative and tolerant (he did not blame me for delay caused by traffic jam near Munich and picked us up in the parking plot down in valley, btw). I think he did a lot of positive work for communication between aviation and veteran communities in Europe and across Atlantic.

Last but not least, he was always amazing me how healthy and active he was despite of his age (almost 90) and his WWII wound. At his home he was walking faster than me! To be precise, he was almost running.

Exemplar for long healthy life and positive influence towards other people.
