Oblt Kurt Dahlmann III/KG 30
Was Dahlmann a member of 9/KG 30 and when Oblt Friedrich Rinck was shot down on 27 Jan 41, did he take command of the Staffel?
|
Re: Oblt Kurt Dahlmann III/KG 30
I don't know the answer but it may help that his RK-EL citation mentions that on 27 January 1941 he bombed the "Moulders and Pieters" ironworks in Newark Notts. from low level, hitting the factory itself and its rail sidings.

Re: Oblt Kurt Dahlmann III/KG 30
Nick: I too have this-he got the Newark factory and Rinck BMARC. It was a popular target for III/KG 30-Dahlmann was after it 23 Nov 40, 27 Jan 41, 30 Jan 41 and 4 Feb 41 but only managed to hit the target on the first & last attacks due to weather

Re: Oblt Kurt Dahlmann III/KG 30
Hi Chris, im particularly interested in Dahlmanns ops you refer to on 23.11.40 and thru January - Febuary 1941 whilst with III/KG30.
Could you add any further detail to these missions, or substantiate Dahlmanns Staffel at the time? Any further scraps of info greatly appreciated! Best regs, Steve. |
Re: Oblt Kurt Dahlmann III/KG 30
Dahlmann's staffel is assumed to be 9/KG 30 as the witnesses of his attacks came from that Staffel. His citation lists attacks on 31 Aug 40, 13 Oct 40, 23 Nov 40, 27 Jan 41, 30 Jan 41 and 4 Feb 41 before he heads off to the Med. If you want more, you will probably have to wait for my next book to be published later this year

Re: Oblt Kurt Dahlmann III/KG 30
Thank you Chris, could you give any details of the book or the subject?

Re: Oblt Kurt Dahlmann III/KG 30
The Luftwaffe's Blitz will cover the period Nov 40-May 41 along the lines of my 2 Battle of Britain books. Crecy will be publishing this as well

Re: Oblt Kurt Dahlmann III/KG 30
Excellent Chris, will look forward to this next title!

Re: Oblt Kurt Dahlmann III/KG 30
For those interested, Dahlmann was with 9/KG 30 and at the end of Jan 41 still Leutnant in rank whilst St Kaps for 7 & 8/KG 30 mid-41 were Oblt Heinz-Hugo Schlockermann & Hptm Gerhard Metzenthin

Re: Oblt Kurt Dahlmann III/KG 30
Chris,
i have for Staffel 8, St.Kpt. Hptm. Hajo Hermann in April and Mai 1941. Did Oblt. Schlockermann replace him and when exactly? for Staffel 8, St.Kpt. Hptm. Alfred Neumann (+) 19.04.41 and replaced by Oblt. Helmut Weinrich. When exactly Hptm. Metzenthin took over? Do you know the St.Kpt. of Staffel 9 during the greek campaign? Re: Oblt Kurt Dahlmann III/KG 30
In respect of Dietrich Georg Marwitz, I have photos of him in III/KG 3 ( he was with III/KG 153 from 10 Mar 38) and after a number of courses, ended up with I/KG 4 from 25 Feb 40 but then bounced around alot before being reported missing with 8/KG 4 on 27 Oct 40. Schlockermann (known as Henno) spent much of his time with Erprobungsstelle and his only combat time was with KG 30. Metzenthin was taken POW with KG 60 but lost his life flying in South America in the 50s

Re: Oblt Kurt Dahlmann III/KG 30
Just as a sidebar on this , having checked the local papers reports for my Ransome Marles raid in 41 I did come across this raid " On Jan 30th ( not 27th ) 1941 two people were killed in an attack by a single plane, which dropped 14 bombs along the River Trent and Muskham Rd. " That area is next to the Nottingham - Skegness railway line and had the W.N Nicholson's Ironworks ( established 1825 ) between that and the Trent cut. A little further up on the other side of the Trent near the East Coast main line is Farrar boiler works ( established 1887 ) But no one local I know even alive during WW2 has ever heard of "Moulders and Pieters" ironworks in Newark Notts. From what I can find Nicholson's carried on producing agricultural equipment but Farrars produced boilers for the navy.

Re: Oblt Kurt Dahlmann III/KG 30
Just looking at Kurt Dahlmann wiki entry there is no mention of his demise , is he still alive ? I believe he would be 97 if he is.

Re: Oblt Kurt Dahlmann III/KG 30
He survived the war & I was in contact some years ago

Re: Oblt Kurt Dahlmann III/KG 30

Re: Oblt Kurt Dahlmann III/KG 30
Just come back from the Newark Library archives , Newark Advertiser mentioned the raid date as 30th Jan 1941 , ARP & police inspectors report to clerk of the council both state 30th Jan 41. Although there is only a one line report mentioning the 2 deaths. There is a full list of when the air raid sirens were sounded and the length of the warning , no sounding on 27th but was sounded 16.00hrs 30th. Hope that helps to muddy the waters. You obviously have plenty of details for Oblt. Rinck being POW 27th Jan 41 but Lt Dahlmann from local reports doesn't seem to be over Newark that day. The attack doesn't seem to have been that successful either 1 bomb fell on the factory , 1 on the embankment to the goods yard the rest strong out across open countryside to the West of the river Devon with the last one stricking the sand quarry between Newark and South Muskham causing the 2 fatalities. Report say all HE with 2 being of a larger caliber

Re: Oblt Kurt Dahlmann III/KG 30
Raid dated 30/1/41 - Newark Advertiser report titled : Daylight Raid on North Midlands Town Two Fatal Casualties When Plane Swooped From Cloud. - After 16 months at war , a North Midlands town suffered its first direct casualties through enemy action on Thursday afternoon when a single Nazi raider swooped through low-laying cloud and dropped several high explosive bombs. The exact number is believed to have been 14 , two of them considerably heavier calibre than the others. As a result Anthony Thompson a 16 year old boy was killed. Working close at hand at the time was Mr J N Saxby. Flying shrapnel inflicted on him wounds from which he later died in hospital.
ARP Report : 12 bombs dropped , 10 landing in fields west of River Devon with little damage. 2 bombs caused damage to factories , shops and houses in the vicinity. As a side bar to this Joseph Norman Saxby bother was killed in 1940. William : Sapper 2002239 11/7/40 aged 20 Royal Engineers Grave 3188. MELBOURNE CEMETERY Son of Harry and Amy Saxby, foster-son of Charles Edward and Hannah Mary Saxby, of Newark Nottinghamshire. CWWGC On 11 July 1940 nine Royal Engineer Sappers training on the railway in Melbourne were killed by a German bomb dropped on their billet in Church Street, Melbourne Derbyshire. at 8am. Eight of them are buried in Melbourne Cemetery. Single He111 of II./KG53 tasked to bomb a target near Burton on Trent that morning the most probable cause. His older brother was also killed later : SAXBY, Private, Charles E, 4858673. 1st Bn. Leicestershire Regiment. 31st December 1941. Age 22. Son of Charles Edward and Hannah Mary Saxby, of Farndon Ferry, Nottinghamshire. Died during Battle of Kampar Malaya. |
Can anyone help me with further info on the plane and pilot who dropped the bombs in Melboune, I live in Melboune, grandad remembers it like yesterday, I'd love to tell him more about it. He was 12. It was so low.
