Missions flown by KG(J) 6
Hello,
I am looking for information about missions flown by KG(J) 6 from airfields around Prague in the last month of the war. I found some information about the units few Me-262s, but I can't find any info about missions flown by the units Me-109s and Fw-190s. Does anyone know more? I am especially interested in 8./KG(J) 6. I guess something can be found in JaPo Publishings "Luftwaffe over Czech Territory", unfortunatly it looks like the book is sold out. |
Re: Missions flown by KG(J) 6
I guess you have to wait for this title:

Re: Missions flown by KG(J) 6
Peter, I heard about this book, but it is mainly about the Me-262. I am more interested in the missions flown by the Me-109s and Fw-190s of KG(J)6.
Maybe someone who owns "Luftwaffe over Czech Territory" can have a look if it contains the information I am looking for. |
Re: Missions flown by KG(J) 6
It doesn't. There may be some detail in the text, though I doubt it. It mostly contains photos and losses - not to minimize the book at all. Wonderful book, but there is only so much they can do given the holes in the 1945 documentation.

Re: Missions flown by KG(J) 6
That's too bad. Does anyone have another idea were I might find information?

Re: Missions flown by KG(J) 6
Very little is written in Czech book "Praha v Plamenech = Prague in flames".
Table of losses is there and some memories...But I cannot say how new it may be to someone interested in these units...pages 80-86. http://www.svetkridel.cz/pix/kniha1228571387.jpg http://www.svetkridel.cz/index.php?i...20KA%8A%8A%C1K |
Re: Missions flown by KG(J) 6
Attached is an article written by Jan Horn about KG(J) 6 operations. There is some info about Bf 109 missions. Jan Horn is also the author of two books about Kampfgeschwader 6. See here http://horn-me262.de/. I hope this helps a little.

Re: Missions flown by KG(J) 6
Thank you very much Hans Mcilveen. No infos about Bf 109 combat missions in the article, but none the less very interesting.
|
Re: Missions flown by KG(J) 6
Jan Horns book 'Wir flogen gen Westen ' has a 10 page chapter titled ' Umschulung zu Jagdfliegen im Raum Prag '. It also includes the losses of Bf109s and Me262s of KG(J)6 in its loss lists.
|
Re: Missions flown by KG(J) 6
Did Horn mention the cause of the Bf-109 losses in his book? Were they all due to accidents or also in combat?
All Bf-109 losses mentioned in his article seem to be due to accidents. |
Re: Missions flown by KG(J) 6
There are around 70 Bf109's recorded as damaged/destroyed, 9 are shown as shot down by enemy fighters (mainly P-51) and 32 pilots are named as killed/injured.

Re: Missions flown by KG(J) 6
Thanks for the information Brian. So obviously not only the units Me-262s flew combat missions, but also the Bf-109s.

Re: Missions flown by KG(J) 6
The list shows 5 pilots killed and 5 wounded on 31st. March while Bf109s on Feindflug and 1 pilot killed on a Feindflug in a Bf109 on 20th April. As regards 262s lost on Feindflug - 1 on 2nd April, 2 on 24th April, 1 on 25th April, 1 on 27th April and one on 8th May. All other 109/262 losses are shown as 'H' for non-operational flight.
|
Re: Missions flown by KG(J) 6
What surprises me is the large number of non-combat losses. I guess the reason is, that most pilots of KG(J)6 were former bomber pilots who didn't had much training on the Bf-109.

Re: Missions flown by KG(J) 6
And what about straffing of US fightr pilots on Prague airfields? That may cause much of damage and destruction ...

Re: Missions flown by KG(J) 6
Hello Barkas,
Can you confirm that the 262 of Oblt. Henning Gulde was 501201? It may have been this 262 : 24/04 A jet of III./KG(J) 6 was shot down southwest of Prague, and 100% destroyed. It may have been attacking B-17s, as a Me 262 is known to have been lost during a B-17 intercept mission. Thank you, Dan |
Re: Missions flown by KG(J) 6
Dear Barkas,
I have the Gulde info as this: 27/04 Lt. (Oblt) Henning Gulde (or Staka), Staffelkapitän of 7./KG(J) 6 was KIA in a Me 262 A-1a after he was shot down by fighters west of Prague. Note that it is listed as 27 April. I look forward to more information. Thank you, Dan |
Re: Missions flown by KG(J) 6
Hallo Dan,
of course I have your book, it´s great work! And also I have many notes for you (I will send you privat message). The date of Gulde dead I´m sure, I found in local archives two diferent police (gendarmerie) reports with the real date (there were name, ID and wnr.), I found also crash site and I got three old, post war photos of wreck with wnr. good for read. |
Re: Missions flown by KG(J) 6
Dear Barkas,
Thank you! I will clear out some space on the private message area, as it is full :-( Best wishes, Dan |
