Maj.Hennig Strümpell

Hello.
I just got his LW Ausweis and I would like to know career details of this 'Alte Hase' if somebody is kind enough to post it. Thank you!

Fran, that's an interesting item, where did you find it? I corresponded with Struempell for years, and he was always most helpful.

Hi Vince,
I found it in a militaria dealer shop jointly with two photos with wife Eleonore and son (or daugher).
I got it because my interest about Legion condor members. Did he talk you about his career in Spain? He evalued some of the first Bf109A.

Very interesting Fran,

Is there any entries to the reverse of the Ausweis?

Interestingly there are only validation stamps until the end of 1941, which could indicate he had a replacment Ausweis issued when promoted and posted to Norway?

I also used to correspond with Herr Strümpell, but I seem to remember in the late 90's he was taken ill and could not reply to my letters so a former member of the same Staffel JG 2 would reply.

Attached is what I have to Herr Strümpell. His Jagdschein and his wife's Kennkarte for your interest.

Regards,
Ian

That fit with his logbook where the "german" entries by the 1./ JG 232 ends in the beginning of September 1936 (08.09.1936). The next "german" entries are from May 1937 (10.05.1037) not August (like in the Doug Stankey files). The squadron leader of 1./ JG 232 wrote in the log that he was sended to spain.

Best wishes

Hi Rasmussen,
The logbook whose copies are circulating over there, even being sold at Ebay with the name 'Lt.Strümpell" written in the cover, are actually from his brother Kurt, flying mostly He-70 and Do-17's.
Hennig flew He-51 fighters and early mark Bf109's.

Best regards

Thank you Ian,
No entries at the reverse, it is a plain cover. Because these Ausweis were the only document allowed to be bear in combat (no info on units or aerodromes), it is exciting to me, to think that he had it in his pocket while dispatching a Spitfire during the Battle of Britain. (Doc is dated Feb.1940 and is very weary, so saw much combat :-).
Find enclosed a Signal page of 1942; the translation would be: 'What a pilot must take with him' showing an Ausweis like mine.
Best regards
Francisco

Thanks Francisco,

However that is sort of incorrect as I have examples with information on the back recording payments, promotions, inoculations and so on. I will try and post some examples.....

Yes, they are however the Fleigendespersonal Ausweis or otherwise known as the Tarnausweis as it camouflages the actual unit he belonged to. The only thing carried in the air for flying personnel and paratroopers.

Some examples I have, have a pasted sheet to the reverse recording what to do when/if you crash your aircraft and what to destroy etc.!

Regarding photos, I believe there are a few photos of Herr Strümpell in the JG 2 book which I can not remember the author correctly. One I seem to remember is of him standing next to Oblt. Hauenschild DKiG....both wearing sunglasses!

Regards,
Ian

I'd believe an wrong statement --- there are two logs. Or what's your explanation:

a) Strümpell 1: 01.07.1937, He 70, 14-44, start: Burgos 14.40, landing: Burgos 16.20 (right "Lt. Strümpell")
b) Strümpell 2: 01.07.1937, He 51, D - IEVY, start: Döberitz 08.55, landing: Döberitz 09.36 ("23.4.1936 Oberleutnant/later corrected: Hauptmann Strümpell")

I don't believe he didn't fly from Döberitz to Burgos on July 01,1937 or you ... ?

best regards

Fran, I have a photo of Struempell which he signed for me, with Krafft Eberhardt in Spain. He wrote that shortly after the photo was taken, Eberhardt was killed in action.

Hi,
Well, seems you have the two brothers logbooks copies, congrats. Shame that Hennig's spanish log has been lost; or not?

The FB copy I have is supposed to be for Hennig but it is now very likely this is for Kurt. The one I have has flights 1-553 and LC flights 1-85, dates from 23/4/36 to 17/4/40. Are you able to say who this pilot was please.

Tony

Re: Maj.Hennig Strümpell

I know the copies were sold as "Lt. Strümpell" book ... but if you have an carefull overview date by date and if you take the words from fran "The logbook whose copies are circulating over there, even being sold at Ebay with the name 'Lt.Strümpell" written in the cover, are actually from his brother Kurt, flying mostly He-70 and Do-17's. Hennig flew He-51 fighters and early mark Bf109's" you see that one of the books (Lt.Strümpell) contains exclusively Do 17/ He 70 and the other He 51/ Bf 109.

So ... book with flights 1 - 85 = Kurt Strümpell, book with flights 1 - 553 = Henning Strümpell.

Best wishes
Rasmussen
