Hi guys,
Just wanted to share few pics which were taken during WW2 at Helsinki Malmi airfield. Some taken by unknown and some by my grandfather who was a field master over there at that time. http://picasaweb.google.com/rkh1939/...ieldDuringWW2# |

Re: Helsinki Malmi airfield random pics
Excellent quality unpublished photographs that would make a very nice addition to quite a few libraries were it available. And a big, "Yes", you should print.

Re: Helsinki Malmi airfield random pics
I wonder wform which period these photos come from?
I think that some were made in summer 1941 (like German Ju 88 or Do 17 Z) but other ones? Have you any information about this? Regards mirekw |

Picture 29 Focke Wulf Fw200 Condor KE+IX is same plane which Hitler used when he visted Finland to celebrate Mannerheim´s 75th birthday. Mannerheim also used this same plane during his visit to Germany, later on the same year. FMP - 4.6.1942 Video where Mannerheim returns, KE+IX is clearly seen on background. Video: Väsynyt Mannerheim saapuu vierailulta Hitlerin luota ? Suomenkuvalehti.fi So it´s most likely taken 27.6.1942 Picture 7 If this is crash of Heribert Koller it is taken 18.6.1944 http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/showthread.php?t=4036 Rest of pics mainly during the war so most likely 1939-1944. |
Re: Helsinki Malmi airfield random pics
Hello!
I would say majority of the "German" photos are from June-July 1941 from the time when KGr 806 with Ju 88s was there. On picture 13 background it might me one of the three KGr 506 Ju 88 planes attached to KGr 806. Picture 14 is German aerial mine? Experts surely can give the type. Finnish fighters without yellow nose but with yellow ring on fuselage and underside wing tips are from period June-September 1941. Picture 7 I would say is more likely from July 3th, 1941. The smoke column comes from Malmi town/railway station (direction, at least). On the day at 14.00 o'clock Finnish time two Soviet I-153 strafed the airfield and the hills around plus Malmi town. At Malmi town a chemical factory was set ablaze and burned to ground. Source for this is war diary of Malmi tower or personal diary of a air traffic controller. IIRC held at Helsinki city archive? I have only copies received from a friend. Personally I am most interested about this photo: http://lh6.ggpht.com/_nKMnLNAz5mE/SP...neet%20015.jpg Is this Me 110 +KP one which took part on the Beowulf operation? That was operation to take the Estonian islands September-October 1941. BTW what was II/ZG 26 unit code at the time? All in all very interesting selection of great photos. Kiitos. Cheers, Kari |
Re: Helsinki Malmi airfield random pics
Looking at the picture, I have such feeling, that quite many of them were done on summer 1941. Some markings on German planes fit, for me, to my theory, but of course this is only speculation.
FW 200, I think too, it was done during Hitler visit in Finland too. Regards, mirekw |

I guess we will never be sure which one. (Funny thing is that my parents still live only 100m away from Koller´s crash site.) Quote:
Mannerheim took off from Malmi and returned 27th of June. If you look at the video you can see that it has rained and concrete tiles are all wet. In a pic, sun has started to shine but tiles are still partially wet. So that is why I think it is taken just after Mannerheims visit to Germany. |
Re: Helsinki Malmi airfield random pics
Hello ddude72,
when Heribert Koller was in Finland in last September, we visited his crash place at Malmi with a small group. One of us was a person who was involved in the search process when Koller´s FW 190 was "re-found" in 2006. This person told us that he knows another person, living very close to the crash site, who has a picture which was taken right after the crash. This photograph is supposed to show the burning remains of "Black 12", the machine of Koller. For some reason, the person who has this photograph, is not willing to show it to anybody. Do you happen to know anything about this? I know that this might be just a rumour, but if it is true, that photograph would be very interesting to see, not least for Mr Koller himself! Best regards, Raimo Malkamäki |
Re: Helsinki Malmi airfield random pics
Hi Raimo,
I heard when you visited the crash site. My father was also there, not one of your group though. (But like I said he lives only 100 m away...) I have never heard of that kind of photo, but I will do some investigation. I will keep you all informed! |
Re: Helsinki Malmi airfield random pics
Hi Raimo,
I have been asking about the picture you´ve mentioned but unfortunately no one knows anything about it. Still, one interesting thing came up: One local resident has a machine gun barrel from Koller´s plane(!) He is not willing to sell it but I will ask If I can take photo if it. |
Re: Helsinki Malmi airfield random pics
KE+IX is Hitler´s personal transport, a Fw 200 C-3/U9 sub-version, W.Nr. 2000099
