WWII Losses of Italian Savoia-Marchettis in Greece

Hello everybody,

does anybody has a list of dates and locations of the WWII losses of Italian Savoia-Marchettis in Greece?

Thanks in advance

Hi Byron,

i'm currently working to get more information about a SM wreck near the
far away, now greek island Kastellorizon (Megisti), so it may concern your area of interest.

But at least for this wreck, i have some "rumors" for you, you may already know:
This wreck seems to be a SM. 79, but his history is, as far as i know, still not known. It was certainly shot down in one of the numerous fights associated with the frequent changes of the ownership of the island of Castelrosso (Megisti/Meis).On the website http://www.turkiye-wrecks.com you find the following information:
"The older Kas countrymen tell stories about this plane. They say that this was one of the three aeroplanes which were shot by anti-aircraft weapons in Meis, while the aeroplanes were trying to bombard the English airbases and ships in Meis where the population was aproximately 14000. One of the planes crashed to the mountains of Kas, the other one was sunked right in front of Meis harbour. The last plane's pilot rejected himself out of the plane but has been shot by anti-aircraft guns. No survivors left from the plane. The pilot has been buried to Kas by Turks but after sometime Italians reburied him and took his body to Italy."( www.u-air.info)

Yes, a summary list of losses would be great! But i'm affraid, it will be more collecting smaller pieces of information to get one.

Greetings to greece

It is a SM81 wreck, not from SM79.

Sorry, hi Dimitris,
yesterday i found another thread from Byron, so i was confounding the actors of the "greek research" contacts.
I'll contact you soon for another question.

Greetings

@Ginklo
Thanks for the info.
I was visiting this wreck about 10 years ago, i'm still not so sure about the type of SM aircraft. Finally i'm not so specialized in identification of italian aircraft.

Do you have found any specific details to assign the wreck to a SM81?
I would like to get more information about this wreck, so if you can provide me convincing details, i would like to change and correct the information on my website.

Thanks

Lino

@lino
The propeller of SM79 must have a conjugation for the spinner, not so for the SM81.
About the Kas photos, the one called "wing flap" is a tipically piece of the undercarriage.
Sorry for my English

@Dimitri, sorry for "borrowing" your topic :-)
@Ginklo
Thanks a lot for the technical docs.
Fortunately i wrote on my website "Savoia Marchetti SM 79 ?" and "This wreck seems to be a SM. 79" :-)
You convinced me: It is much more likely beeing a SM 81. Specially the picture (Labeled as "Left wing flaps" on the
website http://www.turkiye-wrecks.com/kasucakeng.html) seems to
belong to a SM81, as there is a big visible and technical difference between the SM 79 and SM 81.
Do you have also technical docs about SM73, or do you know, if this AC was also in use these days in this area?
Again Thanks a lot

I found only this:
20 dec.1940 SM79 shot down over Kolonia or Golem.
No news about SM73 in Greek theatre.

Hello to all,
A SM79III (bis) of the gruppo Buscaglia/Faggioni has been found by the professional diver Noulis Spourlakos and recently explored by a team of Greek amateur divers. The wreck lies at 60 meters off the island of Poros almost intact in crystal clear waters. Thans to Italian aviation enthousiast and researcher Ferdinando D'Amico the plane's identity is already known with great probability but the research is still in progress

Thanks for the credit. I only tried to be of help for my new Greek friends, considering that this is the first find of a submerged ANR aircraft...
