Luftwaffe Dornier 17 at Goodwin Sands 'still intact'

Luftwaffe Dornier 17 at Goodwin Sands 'still intact'

"The discovery of a unique German warplane off the Kent coast left experts "incredulous". New images suggest the Dornier 17 is still intact and there are hopes that it will go on show." - BBC - By Nick Higham - BBC News

It would be best UK and the Netherlands would join forces and raise both the Do 17Z bomber and the Do 215B nightfighter lying on both sides of the North Sea under similar conditions.
Then restore them side by side like it was done for the Ju 88s of DTM Berlin and the Bodoe museum, Norway.
Here for their Ju 88D and Ju 88G resp.

Sounds as though the RAFM is trying to raise the funds through the MoD...

Not through MoD but by sponsorship and public donations. MoD money is needed elsewhere!

Do 17 seems is in fragile state, likely requiring substantial "cage" building before raising (likely full of sand and mud so could be quite heavy).

Speaking of rare types, spokesman Ian Trisk did not mention the Dutch Do 215 night fighter wreck on other side of North Sea, besides I wonder where the Ju 88 "bomber" example is, that BBC listis in that news article. I know of none complete example in Britain. It whould also be rather nice to see recovery of the substantially intact North Sea He 115 seaplane found on oil pipeline survey many years ago. But that might be nearer to Norway to do I guess..

Doesn't the imagery show rather pointed wing taper for a Do17? It looks closer to a Hampden type wing plan to my untutored eyes...
Still, the experts say it a Do17 so who am I to question them...

Does anyone know if the W.Nr. of the recovered Do 215 have been identifed yet? It doesn't say anything on the museums website.

Mikael,

Did you mean Do215, and did you mean recovered? (I would love to see a Do215 and Do17, both, come to the surface!) The Do17 at Goodwin Sands has been identified as a Do17Z, WNr.1160 belonging to 7 Staffel, III./KG3.

Do 17 found

A Do 17 has been found, Goodwin Sands, near Deal.

The bomber's pilot, Willi Effmert, carried out a successful wheels-up landing on Goodwin Sands but the plane sank. He and another crew member survived.

Who were the other crew members and were the deceased crew members recovered from the wreck?

Re: Do 17 found

Reproduced from The Times newspaper article from August 2010:

"On that morning Do17Z, serial no 1160, was piloted by Feldwebel Willi Effmert, aged 24. With him in the cabin cockpit were its navigator Herman Ritzel, 21; wireless operator Helmut Reinhardt, 27; and bomb aimer Heinz Huhn, 21, whose job it would be to release the aircraft's 16 50kg bombs over one of the key fighter stations at either Debden or Hornchurch.

Huhn was never to get his chance. While flying above cloud over the Strait of Dover the Dornier became separated from the rest of 7 Staffel. Some time after 1pm it was flying on its own when it was jumped at 13,000ft over Deal by a Boulton Paul Defiant of 264 Squadron from RAF Hornchurch. A two-seat fighter with a four-gun power-operated turret, the Defiant had suffered severely from Messerschmitt Bf109s during the Battle of Britain. But it was more than a match for the Do17, in spite of the latter's six machine-guns With both his engines hit, and one out of action, Effmert put his aircraft into a shallow glide and made a wheels-up forced landing on the Goodwin Sands at low water. The aircraft appears to have "ground looped" just before final impact, landing on its back and killing Reinhardt and Huhn. Effmert and Ritzel survived to be captured, and spent the remainder of their war as PoWs in Canada."

Reinhardt & Huhn bodies were both recovered with Huhn's grave at Cannock Chase being catalogued here, whilst according to Chris Goss on the other Do17 thread here Reinhardt is buried in Holland...

@ polyak you can see on my website www.preservedaxisaircraft.com under the relic section that a fuselage section of a Do 215 B-5 have been receover and is on display in Holland. "Stichting Aircraft Recovery Group 1940-1945. Both engines, sections of the fuselage beneath the cockpit have been recovered as well as some parts from within the cockpit. The rest of the fuselage and the rest of the wing will hopefully be recovered soon"

And I'm curious if anyone have succeded in identifying it yet.

Here is an Update :-

The RAF Museum has identified the remains of an intact WW2 Dornier Do-17 bomber in the shallows off the Kent coast. We need your help to save this unique aircraft.

Shot down on 26th August 1940 at the height of the Battle of Britain, the Dornier’s historical importance is immense: this is the world's only surviving Do-17, a German aircraft type that played a crucial role in the Battle.

We hope to raise the aircraft in autumn 2011. Following specialist preservation the Dornier will be exhibited as a tribute to the loss of life on both sides of the conflict.

Your donation, however large or small, will help save this remarkable aircraft for future generations.
