Re: Swiss Bf109E
Hello,
as far as I know, the Swiss Me 109 Es were equipped with Swiss machine guns above the engine (instead of German MG 17s like the Luftwaffe Es). This would explain the differences in looks. There is a Swiss book on the Me 109 in Swiss service, which I have but could not find at the moment, so I cannot give you more details right now. Regards, klemchen |
Re: Swiss Bf109E
Ah, this is the well known photo of the J-355 at Dübendorf, when preserved there, before the museum was established. Frankly, I never noticed these differences, I will ask around.

Re: Swiss Bf109E
The Swiss Bf109E was fitted with Swiss made 7.45mm Fl MG29 weapon and as these had a bore distance of 300mm compared to 340mm on the MG17 and this required the gun channelling and cowling to be adjusted. Also, the MG29 was installed in parallel whilst the Rheinmetall 7.92mm MG17 in the Luftwaffe's Bf109E's were offset.

Also meant to add that the last photo in post #1 shows the signal rocket equipment which could be loaded with red, green and white rockets. The excerpt below, from Bf109E Ersatzteil-Liste, also appears on page 224 of "Messerschmitt Me109 in Swiss Air Force Service" by G.Hoch, Schiffer, 2008]

Re: Swiss Bf109E
According to the photographs the Swiss Bf 109s were delivered without weapons in RLM 70/71 Luftwaffe camouflage and with an empty MG17 engine cover and little difference between the two green tones like on many Luftwaffe 109Es.
When Swiss MG 29s were installed fom August ´39 onwards the engine covers were re-designed and a single Swiss green camo (KW2) similar to the German colours was applied on the fuselage nose. When new Swiss markings had to be applied in spring ´40 KW2 was used for all upper surfaces. Regards Roland |
Re: Swiss Bf109E
Do you have info about the KW2 color, local manufacture paint? Also, do you have German W.Nr. for this particular machine?
|
Re: Swiss Bf109E
KW2 color produced by swiss manufacturer is very close to original RLM 70 black-green paint.
J-555 was built in Arado Warnemünde plant, W.Nr. 2422 |
Re: Swiss Bf109E
Thank you for info :) This mean that paint on preserved sample is not much authentic as well it is lighter?

Re: Swiss Bf109E
Definitely yes, Graham.
There are several photos in Hoch´s book where RLM 70/71 is clearly identifyable. But already with the installation of the Swiss fuselage MGs the engine cover had to be repainted with KW2. 70/71 disappeared in January 1940 when the fuselage markings had to be changed, both for the D and E variants. Re: Swiss Bf109E
True, later on overhauls they get on top single top coat.
