German ATA?
Hi guys
Out of curiosity, did the Luftwaffe have an affiliated oganisation comprising female/overage/disabled pilots/aircrew who delivered aircraft to operational units, as did the British ATA? Cheers Brian |
Re: German ATA?
Hello.
Yes - not only those categories of pilots - the main unit performing this tas was Flugzeugüberführungsgeschwader 1 Lots and lots of losses noted by this unit Regards, Andreas B |

Re: German ATA?
It appears that many of the Luftwaffe personnel used for ferrying were those without operational experience, hence a high attrition rate.
On civilian ferry pilots, US sources include: German Air Force List of ’ Civilian’ Ferry Pilots, A.I. 12, US Air Forces Europe, 22 January 1946, National Archives RG 243 Entry 36 Box 176; Status and Duties of Civilian Pilots in the German Air Force, A.I. 12 Intelligence Report 114, US Air Forces Europe, 22 January 1946, National Archives, RG 165 Entry 79 Box 47. |

Excellent, Matti
Do we know where/how/where Lts Sawkin and Jakowlew were captured? And more names, please! I believe Andreas knows of some. Cheers Brian |
Re: German ATA?
Rather than Soviet POWs used to ferry aircraft, they were probably former-POW that "enlisted" more or less voluntary in "Vlassov-like" formations rather than starve in POW camps.
As for the collision reported by Matti, here is the story of Ilja Savkin: On 21 January 1943 Starshina Ilya Filippovich Savkin stole the I-16 "31" of 691 NBAP and flew to Finland, belly-landing 7 km northeats of Saarimäki, Aunus. He was handed over to the Germans on 1 May 1943 and served later with the ROA air force (the Russian air force created to support the so-called "Vlassov" army). He died on 18 August 1944% |
