Re: Loss of 6 Ju 87 19.april 1940 Norway /S.tg.1 ???

The correct date is likely 25th Apr 1940. This day 810 SQN FAA and 820 SQN FAA up at 03:00 from "HMS Ark Royal" with 13 Swordfish who then bombed airfield Vaernes outside Trondheim. Each Swordfish probably dropped 4 250lb bombs and 8 20lb boms. Several buildings were heavily damaged and some Luftwaffe aircraft were lost/damaged. Among them probably Ju 87`s from Stukagruppe I./StG1 who were based here this day. 3 Swordfish planes force landed on the way back to the carrier due to ground fire damage substained.

Perhaps Andreas can clear this up with his database?

Greetings from Norway

Knut

Thank you all for youre fast replys, appreciate it.

The reason for my request is some rumours heard about Stuka's damaged on the ice of Jonsvatnet, and then transported to Vaernes airport on lorries .

Found this link to wikipedia also : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sturzka...egian_campaign

In time many rumours accour and I find it a bit hard to confirm them:-(..

Thanks a lot!

No rumour. I remeber seeing photo of damaged Ju 87 at Jonsvannet, but below is Ju 87 losses. Do not know if there were any more than them five (5) listed.

Thanks Ed!

Is there any possibility that this list is uncomplete?
3 planes down by Narvik and I think the other one at the top must be the one that got lost at Fiplingvatn.

My biggest dream is a time travel advice ....would have been great to have been at the lake some days in April 1940 :-)

helloJohn Frederik,
i heard even a story that on the botom of jonsvanet there must still be a stuka laying, they used the lake as landing ground but when it started to defrost some sank to deep in the ice away and all the things that could be removed were removed
anyone can confirm this?
cheers

Hi!

What's still on the bottom of Jonsvatnet is still a mystery....would be happy to know though..

There are many rumours..

On is that what is told is a Arado went down on the ice some other year, stright to the ice with the crew.It is told to be a war grave... Have no info about that at all, so still not confirmed.
There was back in 2004 salvages one Ju88 and one H-111 in remarcable good shape.
At the same time the remains of 2 more Junkers was found..
The search group told us that they found more but info is not given about what..
One wreck was burned an not possible for id..
One Ju52 is still there, it was coded RO+AU

Hi, all

There were 7 Ju 87´s destroyed when Værnes airfield was bombed on April 26th - I believe this is the date and incident you are looking for.

As this was before the GenQu records hold information in WNr and the like, I do not have any further information at this point.

The unit is given as 1./St.G.1 - the 1st Staffel of Stukageschwader 1. There were no personnel losses in the unit on this date, and I have not directly researched these losses in other records.

Regards,
Andreas B

Hi Andreas

Thank you very much for your reply. I look forward to hear from you regarding this item with corrections or additions to my Stuka list. I have for a long time been very sceptical to the fact that Luftwaffe only lost 12 Ju 87 during the fighting in Norway April - June 1940.

Greetings

Knut

Hi John Fredrik

I have been in contact with Kjell Sørensen regarding thr 3 crash sites you mentioned. From there I have picked the 3 WNr in my list. I am very interested in photos of Stukas from the periode 1940 in Norway and look forward to see the photo of the 11th Apr accident and some from the frozen Jonsvatnet.
Have a nice day

Regards
Knut
