Lancaster under friendly fire
The Film "The Fight for the Sky" U.S. War Department shows a lot of strafing against the Luftwaffe. But one scene is quite different: The strafing of an crashlanded Lancaster!!! The plane crashlanded in an open aera, maybee in late spring or early summertime. Any idea of the location, unit?
Thanks, h. |
Re: Lancaster under friendly fire
Hans,
The film is on youtube. To have a quick(er) look in the 41-min movie, around what time is the Lancaster strafing? Regards, Leendert |
Re: Lancaster under friendly fire
31:12 looks like a Lancaster - 4 engines, twin tail. And at 31:14 you can definitely see the roundels.
27:41 looks like a Mosquito to me! Ian |

Re: Lancaster under friendly fire
Sorry that this is drifting a bit off-thread but interesting in that British Pathe one to see an Me 163 Komet at about 4:16.
Along with a load of B-17s being shot up on the ground. Ian |

Re: Lancaster under friendly fire
Hello mhuxt,
Could you please tell me the date on which the two Mustangs of the 4th FG, shot down the No.140 Sqn Mosquito? Col. |
Re: Lancaster under friendly fire
Hi Col
If the two sections on that bit of the film are one and the same event (it looks like they probably are although the target a/c in the first clip of the film is much further away and it's not easy to see what it is) the 'preview notice' just beforehand says 6th October 1944. Anyone know what happened to the poor guys in the Mossie? Ian ps Sorry Hans, we do seem to have drifted well off your original question about the i/d and location of the Lancaster being strafed. |

Re: Lancaster under friendly fire
Please don't start on that, I only posted the other link for the sake of information, as you see the incident is no secret and has been discussed before.
Would much rather know the serial of the Lanc originally under discussion. |

No offence intended nor, I hope, taken. Just teasin' re Hans's ancestry as that's what the fighter pilots thought. But seriously, as pointed out, the thread has drifted a bit so like you say it'd be interesting if we could find out anything about the Lanc. No clues as far as I could see in the film. Ian |
