Abandoned Me 109's of JG27 at El Aden LG
Hi Guys,
We have a couple of images of abandoned Me 109 aircraft at the El Aden Landing Ground. Can anyone supply us with any further information at all? Regards Melvin www.aircrewremembrancesociety.com |

Re: Abandoned Me 109's of JG27 at El Aden LG
Hello,
Of course El Adem. 1st picture: El Adem or Gambut? 2nd picture: Décembre 1941. Period match with El Adem but another picture of same White 5 I downloaded from here around is captioned Ain El Ghazala (which is not that far); still December 1941. Not that much from my part Melvin. Regards, Franck. PS: From Jagdwaffe, Vol.3Sect.3 Weisse 5 is "believed" to have been captured in El Adem, 22 December 1941. And from Vol.4Sect.2 first picture at Daba, end 1942. |

Many thanks Andreas & Franck, forgive me for the error of spelling for El Adem not Aden, my eyes are getting worse! Attached are a few more aircraft in the desert.

Hi, I believe it is 'El Daba' in English publications Chris. See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAF_El_Daba
There is a another shot from the same press kit showing the scene from across the road with Bf109s seen lined up on the other side. Cheers Goran |

Re: Abandoned Me 109's of JG27 at El Aden LG
HI
I know this is late, but a few points: 1) El Daba and El Adem are of course not the same. 2) Dec 41 relates to the Axis retreat during CRUSADER, while the picture by F19Gladiator is from Nov. 8 1942, i.e. the retreat after El Alamein. 3) 22 December is unlikely as date of capture. The Empire troops at that point stood just outside Benghazi and I doubt Me 109 were still operating in the Tobruk area by 22 December. El Adem itself was occupied on 9 December 41, or thereabouts (on which date a Me 109 is reported crashlanding north of El Adem, with the pilot being surprised to find British tanks on it). My guess is that by 22 December Agedabia was the most forward LG in operation for the Axis, although Magrun may still have been in operation. Antelat was occupied on 22 December, and anything east of it as well. Either the date is wrong, or maybe the pilot got badly lost during operations over Cyrenaica, flying east instead of west. All the best Andreas |
