Dogs in Cockpits
 

I've read on several different occasions (different sources) that little dogs (mascots) flew with Luftwaffe pilots during the Battle of Britain and in the East. Does anyone have details? How common was this practice?

I know that a crew of the KG 40 had 2 german shepard dogs during the most missions with them (He 177).

A wreck of an Me109 was found recently (UK if I recall correctly), where the pilot did not survive. In addition to the remains of the pilot, they found the bones of a small dog.

The subject of aviation mascots is well researched in the book relevant to the attached link. Well worth looking at as the Luftwaffe content has some relevance to the posts mentioned.

It's always seemed to me that the kommodore's dog was the brains of the outfit in JG 5.

Helmut Fuhrhop lost his dog Peter killed by AA over Spain, and on his last flight his two boxer dogs were killed along with him and all the crew when their Ju 188 fell to Typhoons on 29-2-44 (transfer flight 1/KG6). On the RAF side I have a little booklet called 'Absolutely Barking' in which W/C 'Paddy' Barthropp recounts the times of Mr.Jackson a dog descrbed as 'Reluctant Aviator and Parachtist Extraordinaire'.

not luftwaffe.but RAF Paterson hughes killed 15/9/40 had a small puppy,;
it went missing the day he died..it presumed he took it up with him.as the dog was no longer seen after.that day..

It would have to be a small dog to fit in a Bf109 or even a Spitfire cockpit and I am sure no fighter pilot would want to go into combat with the added worry of a dog sitting in his lap! In respect of Hptm Fuhrhop, he had taken them on a transfer flight after an operational mission when they were bounced by 609 Sqn

A picture of a little terrier in the cockpit of an ME109 flown by Fritz Buchner to be found in Airborne Animals and Cockpit Companions and Kurt Geisler FW190 tip and run raid casualty died with his Dachshund dog in his cockpit.

A Rumanian fighter pilot, Ion Galea, whom I've met while back, had a logbook for his dog. He used to tell to younger airmen: "even my dog has more flying hours than you and I can prove it!" :D

13.(Z)/JG 5 socalled "Dackelstaffel", the Staffelkapitän OLtn. Felix Maria Brandis own two Dackel and they where with him and his gunner on "Feindflüge". Also other Flugzeugführer at the 13. own Dackel and at least one of the small dogs where the reason for an deadly crash!
Can only remember that the Flugzeugführer was an Oberfeldwebel and the crash was in July 1944 or so.
