Need info 2/KG76 pilot Uffz Hanke, his a/c & crew of Do17Z badly damaged during 15.9.40 attack on London
Hello,
In the photo section of Alfred Price's excellent book, "Battle of Britain Day: 15 September 1940," is a photo of BO Uffz Theodor Rehm and crew photographed after return to Beauvais following noon attack on London. Plane reportedly had 47 bullet hits. We have this incident in our EoE Luft Loss DB as: "September 15, 1940: 2./KG76 Dornier Do17Z. Returned damaged by fighters during sortie to London Docks 12.15 p.m. and landed with port main wheel punctured. FF Uffz [ ] Hanke, BO Uffz Theodor Rehm and rest of crew believed unhurt. Aircraft damage state not recorded. (Price) My questions: a) Can anyone supply the first name of Uffz Hanke? b) Can anyone identify there other members of the crew besides Uffz Rehm in the photo in the book? I presume that Hanke is one of the four men pictured. c) Can anyone supply the W.Nr. and a/c code of Hanke's Do17Z that day? d) Can anyone supply photos of this a/c during its service with the unit or after it was damaged in this incident? Any help here would be appreciated. Regards, Larry Hickey EoE Project Coordinator |

I have Rehm's KG 76 loss list and Hanke's christian name is not listed, albeit it is not mentioned on 15 Sep 40 but 18 Aug 40. There was a Georg Hanke on 6/KG 76 though

Re: Need info 2/KG76 pilot Uffz Hanke, his a/c & crew of Do17Z badly damaged during 15.9.40 attack on London
Chris,
What is "Rehm's KG76 loss list" Is that an NVM or some other kind of documentation? Are the other crewmen listed, plane code or W.Nr., or any details of the mission? If so, I'd certainly appreciate at copy. Georg Hanke sounds like a serious prospect for "Hanke." Was an an Uffz? Regards, Larry Hickey EoE Project Coordinator |
Re: Need info 2/KG76 pilot Uffz Hanke, his a/c & crew of Do17Z badly damaged during 15.9.40 attack on London
Rehm was in charge if the KG 76 Association & produced a personnel loss list for operations over UK. It listed names not ac details & must have been produced via WASt. I have seen no other list for any other campaign. Hanke was a Fw in 1942

Re: Need info 2/KG76 pilot Uffz Hanke, his a/c & crew of Do17Z badly damaged during 15.9.40 attack on London
Chris,
Thanx. Any idea whether a history of KG76 is in the works by anyone? Regards, Larry Hickey EoE Project Coordinator |
Re: Need info 2/KG76 pilot Uffz Hanke, his a/c & crew of Do17Z badly damaged during 15.9.40 attack on London
I think it was Rehm's intention but he is no longer with us. I will be picking up material from Alfred Price next week so maybe there is something there-I will tell you

Re: Need info 2/KG76 pilot Uffz Hanke, his a/c & crew of Do17Z badly damaged during 15.9.40 attack on London
All -
Georg Hanke was an Unteroffizier in September of 1940 however I have him attached to the Ergangzung Staffel Kampfgeschwader 76 on the date in question. Could he have been temporarily attached to 2 Staffel? Also if you have a photo of the crew I may be able to confirm Hanke (Georg) in the picture. My information comes from Georg Hankes Wehrpas. Regards Jeremy |
Re: Need info 2/KG76 pilot Uffz Hanke, his a/c & crew of Do17Z badly damaged during 15.9.40 attack on London
I found the photo of Rehm's and his crew on Amazon. The photo is not really that clear but the flyer on the left could very well be Georg Hanke.
Hanke appeared to have somewhat unruly hair and I have shots of his feldmutze propped on his head and sticking out slightly on the sides similar to the flyer on the left. Below is a link to my website illustrating the beginning of my research on Hanke. If this proves to be Georg Hanke this is a great piece of information!! http://aufhimmelzuhause.com/id143.htm Regards Jeremy |

Re: Need info 2/KG76 pilot Uffz Hanke, his a/c & crew of Do17Z badly damaged during 15.9.40 attack on London
Chris,
Great news; I assume this is the result of your AP project. Does any of the data with this give Hanke's first name? Georg? I appreciate the more precise location for Figge's FL. Regards, Larry Hickey EoE Project Coordinator |
Re: Need info 2/KG76 pilot Uffz Hanke, his a/c & crew of Do17Z badly damaged during 15.9.40 attack on London
Larry: No christian names I am afraid and I am still not convinced about Georg Hanke based on Jeremy's wehrpass

Re: Need info 2/KG76 pilot Uffz Hanke, his a/c & crew of Do17Z badly damaged during 15.9.40 attack on London
Chris,
I haven't yet accepted Georg as Hanke's first (christian) name yet. Like you, I think that it's just too much of a stretch right now to accept his as confirmed. Regards, Larry Hickey EoE Project Coordinator |
Re: Need info 2/KG76 pilot Uffz Hanke, his a/c & crew of Do17Z badly damaged during 15.9.40 attack on London
On the reverse of the photo (which reads left to right Rehm, Eikelmann, Hanke & Schulz) it states that Hanke was killed later which means it was not Georg Hanke-perhaps Matti can now help?

Chris,
Thanks for the caption to go with the photo. Is there a similar caption with the Niebler crew photo? Regards, Larry Hickey EoE Project Coordinator |
Re: Need info 2/KG76 pilot Uffz Hanke, his a/c & crew of Do17Z badly damaged during 15.9.40 attack on London
There are dozens of aircrew named Hanke lost (KIA, MIA, WIA) 1939 - 1945, but non of them from KG 76 (when he was KIA, WIA or MIA). In our database we had around 40 people named Hanke - Fighter, Destroyer, Bomber, Transporter, Recce, etc.

Re: Need info 2/KG76 pilot Uffz Hanke, his a/c & crew of Do17Z badly damaged during 15.9.40 attack on London
I have no suitable Hanke killed. However, here might be your man:
1938-09-27, I/KG 158, Do 17, 53+D11, 400 m nördlich Steinabrückl bei Wiener-Neustadt, Um 09.45 Uhr Aufschlag infolge Motorstörung und Brand. Bruch 100 %. Flugzeugführer Ogfr Hanke, Hans-Joachim, verletzt Beobachter Uffz Kalbfleisch, Fritz, verletzt Bordfunker Gefr Schätzle, Augustin, verletzt I/KG 158 became I/KG 76, which makes this connection very likely. Unfortunately no info on the final fate of this Hanke. Matti |
Re: Need info 2/KG76 pilot Uffz Hanke, his a/c & crew of Do17Z badly damaged during 15.9.40 attack on London
Matti,
Good find. Thanx! Can anyone now confirm the name of a bomber pilot named Uffz Hans-Joachim Hanke who served with I./KG76 in September 1940? Does this name appear on any fatality list later in the war? He was reported in a photo caption to have been killed during the war. We may be getting close here. Re: Need info 2/KG76 pilot Uffz Hanke, his a/c & crew of Do17Z badly damaged during 15.9.40 attack on London
...and nobody with that name figures on the VDK site. However, on 8 Dec 41, Fw Hans-Joachim Hanke, a pilot, was awarded the Ehrenpokal. This looks more promising and perhaps Rehm meant he died after the war (or was mistaken)

Re: Need info 2/KG76 pilot Uffz Hanke, his a/c & crew of Do17Z badly damaged during 15.9.40 attack on London
Please note, that I have in my database mainly persons, who have been involved in aircraft crash. Others, especially after summer 1943 (when GQM quit reporting other, than aircraft losses), are mostly missing. Therefore, this Hanke could have been killed for some other reason - bombing on ground, infantry attack, road accident, shooting accident, disease etc.
Maybe someday we'll find his final fate. Matti |
Re: Need info 2/KG76 pilot Uffz Hanke, his a/c & crew of Do17Z badly damaged during 15.9.40 attack on London
Hello,
It would seem that between Matti and Chris we've pretty well gotten this one resolved. Thanx to everyone who has contributed! Regards, Larry Hickey EoE project Coordintor |
Re: Need info 2/KG76 pilot Uffz Hanke, his a/c & crew of Do17Z badly damaged during 15.9.40 attack on London
Hi, can we now say for sure that the two unnamed members of Hanke's crew on 15.9.40 are Eikelmann and Schulz. Are the ranks and christian names known?
Best regs, Steve. |
Re: Need info 2/KG76 pilot Uffz Hanke, his a/c & crew of Do17Z badly damaged during 15.9.40 attack on London
Fw & Uffz and no christian names unless Matti has a link with anything 2/KG 76 post Jun 41. Trouble is no mention with Ehrenpokal or other awards and Schulz is very common

Re: Need info 2/KG76 pilot Uffz Hanke, his a/c & crew of Do17Z badly damaged during 15.9.40 attack on London
There is no Eikelmann in my database. However, I think, that there is a typo in the name, and correct person can be found here:
1941-09-14, 8./KG 76, Ju 88A-4, (88)8534, F1+ES, Legmitten bei Heiligenbeil, Zusammenstoß in der Luft mit Ju 88A-4, Werk.-Nr. 888520, F1+AS. Bruch 100 %. Flugzeugführer Lt Schanze, Werner, + Bombenschütze Uffz Pirzer, Hans, + Bordfunker Uffz Rother, Alfred, + 1.Wart Fw Palm, Erich, + Bordschütze Ofw Eickelmann, Friedrich, + For Schulz, who should be Bordfunker, I have two possibilities: Uffz Erich Schulz, who was in 7./KG 76 in July, 1942 and Fw Herbert Schulz, who was in 2./KG 76 in March 1943. Maybe the last one fits better? Matti |

Hi Matti just out of curiosity, were there any casualties from the crew of W.Nr 888520 in the collision with Lt Schanze's a/c?
